Mountain Biking - Looking at new forks HELP PLEASE!!

I'm looking at upgrading the fork on my bike. It's an old schwinn, and the fork is all crapped out. A lot on the bike has been replaced, except the fork... after that, I guess it will be the frame. I ride mostly cross country or light downhill, but I'd like to ride some heavier stuff. I weigh about 170, I need about 18" - 20" from axel to the top of the fork. Ive looked at marz, manitou, and rockshox.. all are great, but I'm leaning towards rockshox. My budget is around $300.00 US, but is highly negotiable. Any suggestions would be great.

skip manitou except for the higher end models.

Just about anything except the very bottom of the barrel will be good from RockShox. Ditto for Marzocchi.

Yeah, Ive pretty much decided against the manitou. Also, I find that the Marz forks are a little more pricey than the rock shox... is that any indication that the marzochi forks are better quality? Thanks for your input.

I had the same impression that you did...which is one of the reasons I decided to buy the bike that I did. After break-in, all I can say is that I'm spoiled. The Marzocchi fork on my bike is butter-smooth.

IMO, they are well worth the money as their compression/rebound is extremely smooth-feeling, and the adjustments are very precise.

I've owned a few RockShox in the past, and don't get me wrong...they were all good forks. None of them ever broke or failed. Ditto Fox. The main reason I'm now in love with Marzocchi is simply b/c of the smoothness. No hang-ups or rough spots during travel at all.
