Southern California - Bike lights?

What kind of light are you going be running next month after time changes? I have a halgoen Cygo Lite Night Rover NiMH Dual Beam 12w. I was out running this last year and had to follow my friend with his HID Blow torch(I think).

I'm thinking of going HID this year, still use the halogen on then the bars but get the spot HID for the lid. Prolly end up with this since it seems the most bang for buck.

Any recommendations? I have a $200 budget for a light. Was thinking about the new Cateyes Triple or double shot LED setup.

Whats wrong with " Cygo Lite Night Rover NiMH Dual Beam 12w " ? I just bought them and they seem okay.

It doesn't throw enough light far from me at higher speeds, I begin to outride the light at about 17-19mph on the single tracks. Over 20 is blurry... and thats not even on the DH. Gets a lil scary when you only have a split second to react to what coming.

Gotcha I usually night ride at Fullerton Loop which is weak. I ride there with my wife so I can feel say safe:D

I've looked at that light on batteryspace before and been tempted-- I think the price has come down from last time I looked. I buy all my rechargable cells and chargers from them (I buy cells with solder tabs for rebuilding batteries), but haven't tried their lighting system yet.

For the road, the Schmidt and dual E6's are hard to beat.

They throw plenty of light with good optics, and you don't have to worry about charging that darn battery. :)

I usually ride on streets with streetlights, so I use a headlight that lets me be seen rather than one that lets me see. I use this one:

I use a run-of-the-mill blinkie on the back.

I see too many guys with that setup, with a weak blinky, and a barely noticable front light. Usually see them as I'm about to run over them. They'll run 1 blinky on the back instead of multiple ones, and then they're on hour 102 of the 100 hour run time for the batteries so they're very dim. Usually they accompany this with dark clothing. If I get a chance I roll down a window and tell them that they're darn near invisible and that their tailight is dead. I ride in a mix on my commute, cutting through Mission Trails park without any lights, the Lumotec/Schmidt combo was good for 20+. Also if you do any touring or longer Randonees, the Schmidt is the setup of choice.

I always wear one of those reflective running vests, too.

My night time setup includes an HID front light, ARC HID, lightweight helmet light, Princeton tec eos.. I usually run the helmet light in flashing mode and a Planet bike BRT7 tailight. The BRT7 has multi directional flashing and is 16.00. I always wear white or bright yellow jerseys to be seen.. I ride at night quite a bit and being seen is a priority..

I think adding a helmet light in addition to the light you are already running will be a benefit. I have tried some of the bigger helmet lights with more power but did not like carrying the battery in my jersey pocket. If you have a Camelbak, this is usually not an issue.. Take a look at the PT EOS, it is under 50.00 and is a great light, weighs less than 4 ounces with batteries. Make sure to get the bike version, it comes with helmet and handlebar mounts..

Recently upgraded from my old reliable (1998) Niterider Halogen to a Niterider Rage HID. Cateye blinky on the rear.

I always wear one of those reflective running vests, too.
Me too...and I look really goofy (I have it on in my avatar shot), but I feel safer with it on. I also have reflectors on my shoes and helmet. I used to joke that I want the car to see me right before it hits me so that it doesn't drag me 10 feet. Not so funny given the recent rash of hit cyclists! :( So, for real, as "lit" up as I can be is what I'm doing. Oh, and the light I love is my Niterider Storm HID (2005).:D It's like a car headlight and worth every penny. I have the cateye large blinking light on the back, and sometimes (like when I was on PCH in the dark), I clip one or two smaller cateye blinking lights on my vest.

Just a few days ago someone who owned one posted about it and liked it. You're not going to get that much light for the price with anything else I know of. Not LED lights.

Try and search the forums for ??? HID light? Batteryspace? I can't rememeber what thread it was in.

i heard batteryspace is PITA to work with. I'd rather buy direct from Trail Tech. Most the probs I heard about the HID i'm looking into is with people trying to use Li batteries to save weight. I'm not concerned about 1/2 more or what evere the difference is between the different stlyes of battery. Other then battery probs, i hear this is bang for buck teh best way to go.

I've ordered from them a bunch of times and had good luck with customer service when I had to deal with them. In one case they shorted me 10 AAA cells from an order, which they then shipped right away. In the second case the UPS truck with my order was stolen!! (the online thing said "out for delivery" and my stuff never showed) and once UPS finally admitted that, Batteryspace shipped a replacement order right away.

did you get the HID setup from them or go LED?

I've just ordered cells and chargers and things from batteryspace-- never ordered the lights. I rebuild my own batteries for some old nightrider lights.
