Trials! I went to pedal kick and the gears skipped and the chain got caught between 3rd and 4th and it ripped 3rd out of place. Second time this has happened.

Second time that's happened? You might want to check that your rear tyre is seated in the dropouts okay or possibly check the chainstay alignment. It could be that misalighnment might be causing the indexing to get thrown off. Were you getting much ghost shifting before it gave way?

That happened to me a while ago. Pedalling hard uphill and knee hit shifter and crack it broke.

Nah, it just skipped when I gave a really hard, fast pedal stroke. The derailleur isn't in the greatest of condition either.

Nah, I think it's cheaper to get a new cassette.
