Southeast - Moving to Conyers, Ga.... rides?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'll be moving to Conyers, Georgia, in two weeks. I went down there weeks ago to look around, never having been there before. Most, if not all, of the non-highway roads all end on the sides into a ditch or someone's front lawn and the roads are not wide at all. Maybe I just have to get used to the different roads...... Are there any good routes (road biking) in the area? Where do you guys go to ride? Thanks.

Not many although there are several group rides out that way.
BTW, the only bike shop in Conyers closed not long ago. Not a good sign. :(

Didn't they just finish up the PATH sections in Arabia Park?
Look into the www.bikesbl.org site. I know Tommy Lupo has lead a ride from Tucker down through Conyers to the Monastery near there a couple of times a year. Keep an eye for the 'fruitcake ride' on the bikesbl calendar.

bikesbl is really good. Also check out http://www.sadlebred.com/atlroadrides.html
Being in Conyers, there should be some good rides a little farther out, like social circle and buckhead and some places like that. No groups, but I have been out there and there are some good roads out that way for riding, and fairly flat too.

Just to clarify -- the incorporated town of Buckhead, Georgia not the ritzy Atlanta neighborhood also called Buckhead.
I agree just to explore around. There's some great riding out east of Conyers especially if you enjoy distance touring and camping.

Check the ride calendars.
Btw, the fruitcake ride is quite good.

There is a neat MUP around the Stonecrest Mall. I would head away from town. Maybe Rutledge.

Thank you, guys and girls! Your help is much appreciated. I'll be moving down to Conyers next week. Beautiful scenery, fresh(er air than NJ!) air, and new roads for me. I can't wait! Thanks again.

www.routeslip.com has several good rides in Conyers, The Horsepark, as well as Social Circle
You can download the Fruitcake Ride Map from the SBL site (www.bikesbl.org (http://www.bikesbl.org)), but there is one change in that the Panola Mountain extension of the Arabia Mountain PATH is the best way to get to Hwy. 212 (Browns Mill Road), while the map says to ride the PATH to Evans Mill Road.
Also, you can download a map of the Arabia Mountain PATH Map that's a little out-of-date, but still has some good routes in the area.

It's not terribly friendly over here.
You could find one of the big subdivision to take a loop on - many only have one in/out so the traffic is light.
The one past Aldi (first one on the left) has a pretty big loop, but if you are looking for big mileage that may be dull.
Rt 20 out to McDonough is pretty wide after you get out of Rockdale so.
The access road to Covington isn't too bad. It's straight, so people can at least see you.
Just wear something obnoxious bright. People are pretty dumb here when it comes to cyclists.
I don't road ride anymore, but when I did here I have a neon Yellow Pearlizumi jersey I wore on most days.
I hate it when they honk the horn when they are about 20 feet behind you - scared the poo out of me on more than one occasion.
The Arabia Preserve is chopped up a bit because you have to stop for traffic.
There are some folks in McDonough that have rides. It's the shop in the Walmart plaza.
If I recall correctly... the Olympic Mountain Bike trail (from 1994) is in Conyers... I know the request was for ROAD... but the area aound the trail was also used for Equestrian events in 1994... It seemed like there was some pretty decent road riding conditions when I visited the area back in 2001 around the complex... (anyone that actually lives there know for sure?)
