Hi fellow Athenas! I'm so happy we've claimed our corner of the forum. I always feel a little intimidated around the "average sized" riders, so I think it's great to know that there are so many of us out there.
Name: Laura
Age: 28
Marital Status: Not yet... but after dating four years I think I'm about to propose to him!! haha.
Height/weight: 5'7" and I'm somewhere around 250ish? I stopped weighing myself a couple of months ago because it did nothing but upset me. Sooo, I'm currently boycotting the scale. :D
What bike do you currently ride: 2005 Raleigh Venture 4.0. It's my first bike as an adult, currently obsessing over my next bike purchase. I can't decide which I like better: road or mountain. I'm still trying to get over my fear of cars. ;) I'm leaning more towards a road setup though.
How long have you been riding?: I got jealous of my boyfriends bike about a year ago and decided to try and get out there with him, bought the bike but really didn't get serious until last May when the weather got a bit warmer.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Well, I've kind of given up on actually losing weight. I've gained 100 pounds in the last 8 years and it seems that none of the "diets" really work for me. For now I'm just working on changing my lifestyle: biking more and making better choices.
What is your ultimate goal?: My weight goal is to get down to about 160 or so. My cycling goal is to be able to do some cross-state rides/touring.
How often do you ride and for how long?: Well, I'm a second time around college student, and I work in the evenings, so this past summer I was able to dedicate my mornings to riding. I rode pretty much every day, about 20-25 miles each time. I amazed myself in those first couple of weeks and I became addicted. Unfortunately, school is back in full swing and going there full time and working 30 hours a week doesn't leave much time to get out and ride. I still try to fit in a couple of rides a week though.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: Oh gosh... where to start! The energy its given me. The "getting back to nature" aspect. The sound of your tires on the pavement. The great sense of accomplishment you get when you break your own records on a ride. The fact that I feel like I've found something that I enjoy so much that it doesn't feel like exercise... well, except for the sweat! ;) Oh, and something my boyfriend picks on me about: I get really giddy after a ride... everything's funny and I can't stop smiling. Adrenaline overload, I guess. It's almost ridiculous, but I'm certainly not complaining!
So that's about it! Look forward to getting to know you ladies!
Name: Stacy
Age: 31
Marital Status: Single and living with superslomo
Height/weight: 5'11"/173 lbs
What bike do you currently ride: 2006 Trek 7100 and a mid-80s Super Le Tour that my dad had.
How long have you been riding?: I rode as kid all the time in triathalons until I took a header. I broke both of my wrists, my jaw in 2 places, and got 38 stitches. Obviously, getting back on a bike was difficult! I got back into riding about 8 months ago and have lost 20 pounds, which I am VERY proud of.
What is your ultimate goal?: Weight wise: down from 173 to 150. Ride a century this coming summer. Meet new friends to hang out with!
How often do you ride and for how long?: I am lucky in that I have a really nice park not too far from me that has a 3K and 5K loop. It depends on how cranky I am - the more cranky, the longer and further I ride. If it's gorgeous out and I am in the foulest of moods, I'm much more likely to do more laps than when it's cold and I'm happy. The longest stint I have done is 42 miles, but I felt quite good and would like to do longer.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: That feeling when you get home and you are sweaty and tired and feel like you've just gone out and done something - even if it's just a short ride. You're healthier for it. And the adrenaline. Definitely the adrenaline :)

Just remember the weight did not come on in a day and it will not go off in a day. Just take one day at a time just like I do. It goes off before you know it. I ride a recumbent from Sun the actual model I am as dumb as a box of rocks with that stuff. Keep the riding up.

Hi, I'm going to post a pic of Mrs Stormcrowe and her trike! She couldn't remember the model, it's an EZ-3 from Sun. I have her photo hosted, so without further ado, here she is!

So, I would like to pose a question: What excercises do you do during the winter months when you aren't able to be on the bike? Do you have a favorite routine? Do you feel as lazy as I do about getting on your bike during those somewhat warm, dry, VERY DARK November evenings?
I need some motivation here ladies! :)

Hello there. I am in the same spot on some of these dank November evenings. I just make sure there is always some type of cracker or fruit in the house. That does get me from wanting the things that are bad no no's. All of us do not stay on the weight loss wagon every minute of everyday. That is just normal. Think nothing of it. Do something you like also on these eveningss. It will also help. I love to ride even with the bad back I have. I own a recumbent for that. My husband tells me that he has to pry me off the thing to get some dinner out of me. :) I love just that. The site seeing on a slower level is great. But the weather is one of those things that is and can be a pain in the neck. Husband is yelling for me, time to go. Talk again soon.
Bye for now

Hi, I am new to the forum and to bicycling.
Name: Pat
Age: 50
Marital Status: Married, to Sandwarrior
Height/weight: 5'2"/180 lbs
What bike do you currently ride: Rans Tailwind Recumbent.
How long have you been riding?: Just started.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: I am trying to get motivated to lose weight - hoping to ride more and eat less.
What is your ultimate goal?: Lose weight and eat healthier.
How often do you ride and for how long?: Just getting started. I have only ridden 3 times, am getting bicycling gear to wear since it is getting colder here. So far, I have averaged 6 miles per ride.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: Will let you know at a later date - just getting started. I can't wait until I can actually do some long distance rides with hubby.

Hey ladies. I've been trying and failing to lose weight for years. My hubby and I have been starting to ride more recently (of course he is in much better shape than I). I am 244 and 5'7". I would like to get down to 150 again...sigh. Hopefully, with his help, I can do it. I work 35 miles from home, so no commuting and besides working the 55 hours weekly, I haven't got much time... Any suggestions would help. We've gone out to do a trail here and there and some road biking.
I'm trying to keep optimistic, but not working this much during the winter.

I've never noticed this post before - love it. We can call it the "fat but fit" thread. Here's my info:
Name: Pam (bcipam)
Age: 55
Marital Status: Divorced
Height/weight: 5'8" - 210#
What bike do you currently ride: My road bike is a 2002 Lemond Zurich. I added an XTR rear cassette and deraileur to give me some help up hills (lowest gear is 30-34). I also ride a Spec. Stumpjumper M4 hardtail, a 2006 Spec. Stumpjumper FSR and my new love - a new Santa Cruz Superlight! I'm really getting into mountain biking.
How long have you been riding?: As long as I have memory... I can remember being 4 or 5 and getting on my bike and riding all day. My passion has gone up and down, some years serious others casual and lately injuries and illness has affected how much riding I do, my it's still a life long passion I hope never to give up.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Yes and No. I want to lose weight but am not good - I love food, bad food. Exercise helps me lose some weight but because of some recent surgery I have not been riding that much and I have gained some weight.
What is your ultimate goal?: I would like to be between 160 - 170.
How often do you ride and for how long?: In the summer, almost every day. Right now during the weekends supplementing with spin class duing the week. If mountain biking usually 10 - 20 miles, if road, anywhere from 25 - 70 miles. I usually do several centuries a year.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: The freedom it provides... can't really explain that but its a childish, joyful feeling. It makes me feel good, no matter how much I suffer. I love being outdoors and I also love the social aspect of cycling.

Hello everyone.
Yes, It is the Mrs. On Tom's sight. Mine is not wanting to work at this moment. Worse things can happen. I want to say good luck to all of you on everything that each of you set out to do.
What about all that Christmas shopping? I am getting my shopping fix for the next year at this time. I am not an avid shopper. Never have been. I think I got that from Tom he has never been an avid shopper either, so he hates to go when I have to have him around. (Really a typical man.) Joking around.
Good Holidays and best wishes to all of you.

Hi fellow Athenas! So how is the winter cycling going? We haven't had any substantial snow yet but cycling in 30 degree weather is chilly! I think the time is coming soon for me to retreat to spin class!
Mrs. Stormcrowe... I'm with you on the shopping thing. This year my family has toned things down and decided to ease off the buying frenzies like we've done in the past. We're going to try to just enjoy each other and spend time together without a big emphasis on the commercial aspect of Christmas.
Johnny_Bravo... Thanks for the thoughts. I wish you many miles and smiles as well! Keep in touch and we can all motivate and inspire each other. :D

GypsyAngel, Spin classes are great when the weather becomes too nasty. Great workout, the music keeps you energized, and it's fun. It also makes you long for nice riding weather :-) Thanks for your well wishes. I aim to put lots of miles under me this upcoming year. Motivation and support are my middle names, lol, I'd be happy to stay in touch. JB

Have any of you used any of the Spinerval DVDs? I have a trainer that I try to use when I can't get to the gym in the winter but I find it soooooo boring. I've read about Spinerval DVDs but there seem to be a thousand of them so what to start with? I did a search on the forum for Spinervals but there was way too much info for me to sort through.
I have a hard time staying motivated through the winter... I need all the help I can get and thought a spinning DVD might help.
Any thoughts?

Eat how you want and ride! That's one of the advantages of the cycling lifestyle!:D
Bad advice. Cycling may allow you get away with a little more, but your weight will remain stable. If weight loss is your goal diet restriction is still necessary.
Just ride more... how about a century?

Stumbled onto this Atena site . . .
Way to go ladies! Nothing like a good support group and getting some quality miles on that bicycle!
While riding a bike is no guarantee to loose lots of weight, it will build muscle that will displace some of that 'non-muscle.'
Keep at it; ride as often as you can, set goals that are achievable and then set some more goals . . .
Rootin' for you all!

What bike do you currently ride: Trek 4300 (borrowed)
How long have you been riding?: I rode everywhere the summer I was 15. Loved it: felt so free. Now I'm getting back into it. Just dusted off my roomate's bike today and went for a ride.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Not currently trying to lose weight, but trying to get my cholesterol under control (275—ouch!). Trying to go car free, so I figure my weight and cholesterol will fall into line with riding daily. Tried many times to lose weight, but always gained it back. Most of my interests are sitting (computers, sewing, reading). I'm approaching cycling as a mode of transportation with physical benefits.
What is your ultimate goal?: Don't really care what the scale says. Would looove to be a sz 8, but would be satisfied at sz 12. Currently size huge.
How often do you ride and for how long?: Since today was my first ride, I can't say really. Just that I'm going to start short rides daily and work up to being car free.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: So many benefits—emotionally, financially (being car-free), physically.

Wow! What a great idea for a thread! I'm a plus size gal right now, but I'm hoping to drop some pounds after the first of the year, when everything slows down a bit. Any guesses how I'm planning to lose the extra weight....biking, of course! ;-D
Name: Lori
Age: 45
Height/Weight: 5'5" 167 lbs
What bike do you currently ride? Trek 1200c, Centurion Accordo for commuting, Schwinn Suburban for errands.
How long have you been riding? I rode all throughtout my childhood/teens just about every day in spring and summer just for fun/getting places. I did a few duathlons in my early twenties then stopped for 10 years or so. Started again in 1999 and haven't stopped!
What is your ultimate goal: Would like to lose 20 pounds, maintain cardiovascular and joint health (already had knee and hip surgery).
How often/long do you ride? I try to ride 4-5 days per week at least 1 hour, I commute occasionally for 20 miles round trip. Now I'm on the trainer doing spinervals 4-5 times per week.
What is your favorite thing about riding? Too many to list but here's a few: Prospect Park in the summer, going fast, riding with my friends, buying new bike stuff:D , saves gas money.

What bike do you currently ride? I ride track bikes. for those that don't know, it's a bike that has one speed so when a hill is coming, i have to stand up and climb. also the pedals don't stop. i can't cruise. If i stop pedaling, the bike stops. I enjoy it b/c if i ride for 15 miles, i know i rode for 15 miles. I don't use brakes, but that is a whole different story. I have a baby blue bareknuckle and an iro both track bike
How long have you been riding? I restarted riding hardcore more than a year ago.
What is your ultimate goal: I'm short so i'm suppose to be 130, but i think my head would be too big for my tiny body
How often/long do you ride? I ride everyday. I commute in nyc to school 12 miles each way through heavy traffic. I've done centuries and that was a ton of fun. If i didn't go to school on day, and i haven't ridden in a couple of hours i start to go crazy. i sometimes just have to ride for 10 mins to get it out of my system
What is your favorite thing about riding? Riding with friends. i love not having to wait for the train and the bus. I love the feeling of riding after a stressful day. I also love riding in the rain.

Happy New Year Athenas! How is everyone doing? I'm enjoying some late warm weather for this area and have gotten miles in outside rather than on the trainer! YAY!
Santa brought me a couple Spinerval DVD's to see if it makes the trainer more tolerable. I've done Sweating Buckets so far and it has lived up to its name. It does make an hour go faster though!
Hope you all are well!

Gypsy, one of the tricks I use is to pick a program and spin easy through the program and sprint the commercials. Just don't try it with one TV show I tried. I got the bright idea to use the Jerry Springer Show and sprint every time one of his guests acted bizarre or got in a fight. I made it through about 15 minutes of continuous sprinting before I was ready to collapse. It WAS a great workout though and when I get to the point where I'm ready to race and beat any cyclist on the planet (Yeah, riiiiiiiight!), I'll be able to hold the pace through Springer, Maury AND Dr Phil!:p :D

That's a great idea Tom! Thanks for the suggestion. I was using music but found myself staring at the clock or my watch. The time just dragged even with music. I know it can't compare to outside but I'd like to make it as tolerable as possible. And I will not try the Jerry Springer thing... it might kill me! LOL! :D

Hi Barbara here. Age 59. married to older man. ; Four grown sons tho' two still live at home :-( I got a Dahon folding bike last year, Speed TR which I LOVE. Started riding three years ago but due to husband's health problems I have not ridden as much as I would like. I too want to go on a coast-to-coast trip----dream/drool about it. Wary of joining other groups due to weight issue. Know at first I will only be able to do 20-40 miles a day but imagine that after a few weeks could push 50-60 miles a day. Obviously speed will not be the biggest criteria. Also I want to take my dog and having a devil of a time figuring out how to do so. Anyways, things to think about. I did go on a three-day trip in "05. A trip in '06 got cancelled due to hubby's operation. Hope to do a week's trip this year---maybe two trips. I AM EXCITED TO HEAR FROM OTHERS LIKE ME!!!
Hey Athenas! I would like to get us a thread going just for us plus-size (fluffy, voluptuous, Rubenesque or whatever) gals who are interested in chatting about biking, fitness, weight loss, and anything else that pops into our wonderful female minds! Basically a support thread for us to gather and not worry about offending the men if we happen to be PMS'ing that day!
I'll be the first to admit that I'm relatively new to biking...all I know is that I ride and I love it! But, I'm always up for chatting about anything and getting to know a few more friends around here!
I thought a little questionnaire would be helpful in getting to know each other and find out our specific goals and such.
Name: Rebecca
Age: 32
Marital Status: Married, to Magoolc1!
Height/weight: 5'3" (on a tall day!)/313 lbs
What bike do you currently ride: Trek 820 mountain bike with some modifications.
How long have you been riding?: I used to ride all the time when I was a kid, but before we bought our bikes last year, I hadn't been on a bike in probably 15 years! We've been riding for about a year now.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: I joined Weight Watchers on 8/28, and have lost 11.8 lbs so far. I'm doing a combination of biking, and exercise DVD's (Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds and Walk and Kick walking/kickboxing combo).
What is your ultimate goal?: Weight wise, it would be about 160...but my main goal is to get my PCOS symptoms under control and have a baby with my hubby (we've been trying for 2 years with no luck because of the medical issues).
How often do you ride and for how long?: Not as much as I'd like...we need to get my handlebars modified first, and we usually do about 5-7 miles at a time. I could go forever if it weren't for the wrist pain caused by the handlebar position!
What is your favorite thing about riding?: Just the feeling I get when I'm riding. It's totally freeing. The fitness benefits are great too!
Don't feel you have to answer any of the questions, I just thought it would be nice to get to know each other and be able to help support each other in our goals and stuff. Have a great day!

Use a kid trailer, and it can double up as a gear hauler as well if your dog is a little un!

another Athena that wants to go cost to coast --- 59 -- I am in SW NY ( Amish country with LOTS of BIG hills ) Have you make any plans or like me just at the dreaming stage Unfortunately my husband is older and has many health problems; possible the children could pinch-hit for me with him while I am gone. .......dreaming.....and slowly buying camping gear etc. Would love to hear from you. You are the only older 'big gal' I have ever heard that also has this crazy desire.

I am 41 years old this month. A long overdue doctor visit has given me a wakeup call. My parents both have had heart and diabetic issues. Mom reversed her diabetes with diet, exercise and early diagnosis. I am 5ft 7 and just weighed in at 265. What a blow! It crushed my spirit. I quit smoking (after 20 yrs) cold turkey 3 years ago. I have gained 100 lbs in 3 years and I am devastated to the most terrifying point in my life. I am a divorced (9yrs) Christian woman who knows that God never intended me to live like this.
THERE!!! I finally said it all. I am soooooooooooo ashamed and humiliated. *********** I feel the urge to fight rising up in me ever so slowly, but it is on the way!! I want to start cycling in a very committed way, with baby steps first (many lower back issues). I am also tapped out financially. With my weight and back issues.........what is the best bike for me and what will it set me back in $$$? Also, how do I need to start. Honestly, I do no exercise now and I have a 10hr a day desk job and I can feel myself dying if I continue this lifestyle. I welcome any and all suggestions and clean conversation. Once I get started, I will join the Athenas.

Faith first, I don't know how much you can afford, but with back issues I'd look at a recumbent. My wife, Crazykady rides a recumbent trike and loves it. It's like a lazyboy recliner!

A used one would probably set you back starting aroung $350-$400.00 for a really nice one!

Well hello everyone! It's been a long time since I've visited you all! (**hanging my head in shame for neglecting all you wonderful people!**) Life's been so busy, and with the crazy midwestern weather we've been having, my hubby and I haven't been able to go riding for a few months. With him being in a car accident last April, last year's riding was practically nil due to his injuries. But, he's much better now and was finally released from his last doctor...so this year it's a go for riding! I can honestly say I'm itching to get back in the saddle again, as soon as things clear up a bit!
How is everyone doing? I'm still truckin' along with my Weight Watchers plan...28.8 pounds gone as of Tuesday! It's a slow go, and frustrating at times, but I know I have to get the weight off if my husband and I are *ever* going to be able to conceive the child we want so much! I can't wait to get back to riding this spring and summer...I'm sure the weight's going to melt off then!
Well, I just wanted to check in with you all and let you know I haven't fallen off the planet...just the bike for a while! LOL Take care everyone, happy riding!!!

~RebeccaWelcome back! Have you thought about using a trainer for your bike when the weather is bad? It's hard to get motivated to do it, but it helps you keep your fitness. Glad to hear your husband is doing well.

Congrats Rebecca! Good job!
I agree on the trainer.....or even look at goodwill and look for a used exercise bike! Anything you can do to keep active will help you out as far as weight, fitness or other goes.;)

WOW!! I have been a member here for about 2 years now and I have to say that this is one of the better threads I have seen in here. All of you gals rock in my book. I am just loving seeing all of the support and good vibes being spread around in here. I spend most of my time of BF in the Road Forum and find this a very refreshing change from all of the immature, childish sniping that goes on in there. Keep it up ladies, you are all inspirations. Perhaps if I show this thread to my girlfriend I can persuade her to get herself a bike (or let me get her one) and join me out on the roads or trails.
Thank you Rebecca for satarting this thread.
Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Brian!
Tom or John...can you post a link to an example of the "trainers" you're talking about? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to some of this stuff and want to see what you're talking about. Thanks in advance!!!

I use the less expensive Minoura because I was hesitant to spend a ton of money on something I wasn't sure I would use. I use it and it's good enough for me. The noise factor doesn't bother me because I have headphones on and am watching a Spinerval video and am in my basement. There is a lot of info on trainers here on BF.
Good luck!

When I use it I put it in front of the T.V. and try to stay on it for at least 30 minutes. I put a phone book under the front wheel.

Mine is the Kurt Kinetic....it's a Fluid trainer. They have the best setup, resistance increases with rpm and are quieter than wind or magnetic trainers.

Excellent. Thanks for the links and photos! My hubby and I went to our local bike shop today, and what did I see there? A trainer! LOL It was a CycleOPS Mag trainer, I think? The guy said he would sell it to me for $135, and from what I saw while Googling them today, that's a pretty good deal. I did see some on eBay for about $50...but I'd rather get it from the LBS guy...he's a good man who's always treated us well with our bikes, and I'd like to keep the money local, KWIM?
And I'm proud to say that I'm back in the bike saddle as of yesterday. Well, at least the stationary one at the gym until I can afford a trainer or the weather breaks. I did a little over 3 miles both days, nothing major, but it's a start. I felt kind of funny though, because I took my gel seat cover in and slapped it on the hard old bike seat at the gym and pedaled my little heart out. Who cares if someone laughs at me, right? At least my butt didn't hurt, and I got a LOT o' butt to hurt! LOL
Have a great night everyone!

Lil_round_one... My spin class had gel seat covers that people could use if they didn't have padded shorts on. And some people brought their own as well. If it helps you in the saddle use it!!!
So I have a question for Athenas... or Clydes if any are around here. How do you get IT back. And by it I guess I mean motivation. I was doing well with eating and exercising and now it's almost like I don't care. Nothing traumatic happened and I can't pinpoint where the change was. But I almost have a "whatever" feeling about it right now and I don't like that. I lay in bed at night and plan and think about how and what I will do tomorrow. And then tomorrow comes and I don't care again. So then at night I feel like crap for failing and plan again for tomorrow. And do the same thing. And so it goes. I need to throw a wrench in the cycle somehow. I know come spring when I'm struggling up the hills I'm going to be cursing myself for not being focused enough to drop some of this extra weight to help me on the hills.
Any thoughts?

First off please make your health your priority...not the job, I understand the need to work. go for short walks at lunch, start slow build up, if you can afford a trainer and a bike go for it. This is what my wife and I did
We had an old minoura trainer that was rusting and sitting around...i stripped it down removed the rust repainted and relubed it, went to Target and bought a cheap bike (<70.00), did a little fine tuning and my wife now uses it. It works perfectly for a trainer.

I hear ya, i get that way too, then end up paying for it. I don't know what the simple suggestion is...I guesss sometimes I just say F'it and get going. I look myself in the mirror, then think about why and who I am doing it for, that can be enough motivation for me.

Gypsy~ What a good question. I know for myself, while I've been trudging through this weight loss journey I'm on, the only thing that's been keeping me going is keeping my mind on my ultimate goal, and taking it literally day by day.
For me, my ultimate goal is to get to a healthy weight so that I have a better chance of conceiving the child my husband and I have been trying to have for over two years. It is hard, and I do have days that I just don't care. I don't feel well or don't want to be on a diet anymore, or I don't feel like working out. On those days, I literally have to "fake it til I make it". I have to force myself to work out, or make myself eat something healthy instead of going to buy ice cream or a bag of Dove chocolates.
Another key is don't get so down on yourself. You've got nothing to gain by beating yourself up for this. People lose motivation all the time. I do. And yes, I feel bad about it. But what makes me feel better on those days is just doing something. On the days you feel you don't care...force yourself to do something active for 5 minutes. Then the next day you might feel better that you did the 5 minutes and do 15 minutes. Soon you'll see that you're feeling better about things. It is hard. Trust me, I know it's hard.
Break things down into smaller goals. When I started Weight Watchers at 324.8 pounds, I nearly cried myself into a nervous breakdown knowing that it would take me losing almost 170 lbs to be at my personal goal weight of 160 lbs. But, instead of focusing on the 170 lbs, I set a goal that I would be comfortable with to start trying to conceive again. I set that goal at 225 lbs. That's still almost 100 lbs, but I make myself focus on it in 10 lb increments. I've gotten almost 3 of those 10 lb increments off my body already. Now I'm working on the next 10.
Something my Weight Watchers leader told us a few weeks ago, and makes a lot of sense if you think about it, is "would you throw out the whole set of china if you broke one plate?" Think about it...imagine an "I don't care" day is one broken plate. Is it helpful to your overall goal to throw out the whole "set of china" (whatever your goal is) because of one bad day?
I hope this helped a little. I know how hard it is when we're faced with lack of motivation. Just keep your eye on the prize, and if necessary, come here for a little kick in the pants once in a while! Good luck!!!

Welcome!!! I too understand the "wakeup call". I have Polycystic ovarian syndrome, and a key factor in that is insulin resistance, which is a "pre-diabetic" condition...so I understand the scariness there. I gained over 50 lbs in two years while my husband and I were going through fertility treatments trying to have a baby (I was overweight to begin with, but the medications wreaked havoc on my body!). I also work long shifts 12 hrs a day at work, and work shift work (rotating from days to nights every month). I know it's hard to fit exercise in with a schedule like that. Please don't be ashamed or humiliated. Oh, that makes me so sad. There is not one of us here that is judging you, not at all! We're all in the same boat as a matter of fact. You have taken a huge step in just realizing you need to take control of your weight/health issues, and I commend you for that. Believe me, I understand $$$ issues as well. Boy, do I! I agree with a previous poster that a used trainer and inexpensive bike could be just what you need to get started, or even just an inexpensive stationary bike. Do you have a Goodwill or Salvation Army Thrift Store anywhere near you? A lot of times there's good workout equipment to be found at a thrift store or even a garage sale or check out www.craigslist.com. With your lower back issues, can you walk for any distance at all? I have a set of DVD's, Walk Away the Pounds that I love, and it's not too strenuous of a workout for a beginner. I know it's not cycling, but it is activity! Good luck to you, let us know how things are going!
