I have an old Schwinn Le Tour. 1020 steel, made in Japan, from the 70's I think, I've owned it since the 80's, it's been in my brother's garage for about 10 years now. I am fixing it up for my 13-yo nephew. It's in (what I hoped would be) the final put-back-together & shakedown stage.
I noticed the front wheel won't sit straight when the axle is bottomed into the dropouts. It's shifted over so the tire/fork gap is about 2/3 on the right side & 1/3 on the left. Tried turning the wheel around, same result, 2/3 gap right & 1/3 left. This causes a noticeable lean while riding.
(1) Is the fork likely to break? I don't sense any breakage or see any bending, but there's a chrome cover over the crown so not really sure of the absence of cracks.
(2) Is it OK to center the wheel by lifting the axle out of the bottom of the drop & relying on friction from the quick-release to hold it? If not, any suggestions for a shim?
(3) Is there a possible repair (i.e., like the 'cold set' suggested for rear spacing).
Any other ideas / suggestions? Thanks,
