i'm looking to buy a new wheelset for my 80s specialized roadbike. according to the seller it has a 127mm rear spacing. i would be using either 25c or 28c tires. i want to spend 200 for the whole wheelset. any recommendations appreciated.

I was just looking at these -- 36 Spoke Road Wheelsets WE944 $99.95 pair:

The hubs are 130mm. I can spread my 126 out to that well enough in the back but my concern is the front. I have to do a little measuring to see if my old fork is wide enough!
Front spacing shouldn't be an issue as I'm pretty sure it hasn't changed over the years. I can put a very modern Mavic Ksyrium front in either of the early to later 70s roadies I own. (Should I be so inclined and willing to risk the wrath ofthe retro gods :) ).
If you can get the rear in, you're golden.

I would suggest considering used. I recently bought a barely used Phil/Mavic Open 4 CD wheelset -- including tyres and nice Sachs 7-speed freewheel -- on eBay for under $150.

Well, neither my Rampar (Raleigh's dark years) nor my Varsity have wide enough front forks for my bike rack. Both Fuji's (1980-ish) are wide enough and can take a modern 700c 25 front rim. If I had to guess, I'd say that they are about 8 mm narrower than modern forks.
