If you're male and you ride, beware

Carolyn Webb
October 2, 2006

MALE cyclists aged 30 to 39 are at high risk of being killed or injured in collisions with motor vehicles on weekdays from 4pm to 6pm.

Nine out of 10 collisions happen on a straight stretch of road with the vehicle hitting the bike by turning or parking. Eighty per cent of crash victims were men.

The facts are contained in a landmark study, jointly funded by Monash University Accident Research Centre and the Amy Gillett Foundation, which analysed 13,900 bicycle-vehicle crashes between 2000 and 2004.

The foundation — set up to honour cyclist Amy Gillett who was killed by a car in Germany — aims to foster harmony between cyclists and motorists.

The foundation will this week announce a $100,000, three-year scholarship, jointly funded by the Monash centre, for a PhD student to conduct in-depth research into bicycle-motor vehicle crashes.

The centre's director, Professor Ian Johnston, said the study had been done because of a paucity of previous bicycle safety data.

"What people normally do is simply say, this is the number of deaths and the number of injured is this. But what we tried to do is see if we could tease out what are the different types of crashes, what are the circumstances," he said. Much more needed to be done, Professor Johnston said.

He said there was also an uncounted toll. "One of the things that is very striking about bicycle safety is that unless there is a motor vehicle involved, we know very little about all of the crashes," he said.

Foundation general manager Melinda Jacobsen said: "We need to know more about the circumstances under which cars and bicycles collide in order to prevent a further rise in the road toll.

"So far this year, 11 Victorian cyclists have been killed on Victoria's roads — more than double the toll for the same period last year."

Percentages sound about right for the split between male and female cyclists, so I think it less a male/female thing than getting hit during that particular time of day. When people are headed home from work and have something besides driving on their minds.

Without a lot more information, this is kind of useless.
As wahoo says, what's the overall percentage of men vs women cyclists? If 90% of the cyclists are men and 80% of the accidents are men, then women cyclists are at greater risk.
The article also doesn't state whether the study pinpoints any causes. Maybe males 30-39 are the least safe cyclists. Maybe fat balding old guys like to run their young, virile competition off the road. Maybe there happens to be a high concentration of such cyclists in a particularly dangerous cycling area.

Statistics can be very misleading unless they are analyzed very carefully

More men then women ride a bicycle, therefore more are involoved in accidents. Same stat is true with motorcycles and race cars. Dig deeper and she may find more men are injuried playing football (no matter what version) then women.

Male cyclists are at "high risk"? Compared to who? Drivers? Motorcyclists? People who eat breakfast at Denny's?

I'm glad someone's studying this, but the press releases, if that's what this is, need work.

Of course we are more at risk!

We are Idiots.:)

If a male is not at risk, they go and hunt for some risk to be invlved in.:)

Usually followed by the classic phrase: "hey all ya'll, lookee here... "

The ever famous: "Hold my beer and watch this..."

The other famous one that comes to mind is "Correllation does not imply causality." I'm interested to see the other statistics surrounding this study. The numbers of male cyclists being injured may be proportional to the number of male cyclists overall, and quite possibly proportional to the equivalent ratio of injuries to female cyclists in the same age range.

Almost as bad as "hey smell this it stinks":)

The one I use is: "Bet y'guys haven't seen this before"

This is usually followed by one or all of: (a) "Don't you dare tell my wife!", (b) "Do you think I need a doctor?", (c) "That was unexpected!?!", (d) "I should have expected that!?!", (e) "Tell my wife which hospital they are taking me to"

I mean really. The sheer number of scars between me, my brother, my dad, my grandfather, and all of my male friends, tells you we live a combination of dangerous and very lucky lives. Not to mention the number of stories we have that begin "So we had been drinking since 9 AM..."

I've yet to meet the women who begins a story with this phrase.

This headline also reminds me of the phrase I used to piss off my teachers in grade school, "No having fun in the fun zone"

I wonder if there is a study proving that podiatrists treat more foot problems than dentists?

Oh good, I'm over 39.:D

$100,000 for a bull**** study like that?? Unless the journalist messed up in an attempt to quote some "significant" stats, it's really a load o' crappo! Men at more risk, my *****!

The bit about cyclists being hit by turning and parking cars is the only useful part of that article, but then, I am pretty sure most people would know this anyway.

I'd like to see what results they get after 3 years. Sounds like a pretty boring PhD, as it would probably be just going through a whole heap of police reports and the like and plugging stats from them.

I always avoid riding during that time in the afternoon anyway.

I'm 23...so I guess I'm practically indestructible!

Great study. :rolleyes:

women are the ones hitting the men.

For $100K, we learned:
1) male bicyclists probably outnumber female bicyclists during weekday rush hour;
2) weekday rush hour is the most dangerous time to ride, or perhaps the most popular time to ride ... hmm;
3) watch those right-hook maneuvers;
4) I just discovered another benefit of being over 55. :)

I'm parking my bike for the next decade because I just turned 30.
