i removed my rear derailer pulleys to clean and grease. i'm worried that i might have the pulleys reversed. is there a way of knowing which pulley goes where? thank you.

On my bikes the upper pulley has a different look - it's teeth are 'thinner.' That is, there is a 'shoulder' where they join the pulley body. The lower one has the teeth tapered into the body. Hope that helps.

thanks for the reply. the derailer is along cage xt. one pully has printing on it with an arrow. the other pully looks plain. i put the1st pully at the bottom and plain pully at the top. it is probably wrong. thankyou

The top pulley will have a little side to side play to help cope with slight derailler misalignments.

The one time I got them reversed when I tightened down the cage they wouldn't turn. That is how I knew I had something wrong. I reversed them and they tightened down just fine.

Many lower-end DRs have pullys that are very similar. On better items the top one (more stress) will have a different bearing material. The Shimano 600 DR on my 82 Cilo has what looks like a ceramic insert.
