to blend the two threads in recent weeks, i thought i would share my experience with the electra townie. i was searching for a bike i can commute with everyday while i'm pregnant (i'm 3 months along now), and after looking at a few hybrids, i still wasn't happy with the kick over and position my body would be in. how long would that be okay? it just didn't seem upright enough. so i decided that the townie, which was so comfortable and interesting in test rides, was the way for me to go. now, i generally ride a trek 1500 road bike, and i admit i was apprehensive about the bike. i mean, look at the second post in the electra townie thread:

These "bikes" are for folks who ride for a few miles at a slow, casual pace on Saturday and Sunday only.
They are not REAL cyclists and these "bikes" are not REAL bicycles.
Personally, I wouldn't ride one. They look extremely uncomfortable to me.
good grief. my ego had to let go of the fact that i may look like pee wee herman, and that other "real" cyclists would sneer at me. but that's all ego. i know what i can do on a bike, and my belief is that if you are on a bike, no matter what bike, that's a beautiful thing.

honestly, i have not had so much fun riding a bike in a long time. i waved at my neighbors. it made me look around the city. i'm not in a race, i'm getting to work. sure, i'm slower, but that's okay. my body is slower. and it's comfortable. it also is working some different muscles than i usually work, which feels great. all in all, i'm so happy i got this bike. the rack is a great addition, i can load up my gear and just hum along to work. thanks for all your advice earlier when i was looking.

It took a test ride on a Townie to get my wife excited about cycling. She ended up with a Trek Sole Ride 300. Lighter then the Electra and has a rear drum brake with a freewheel. She likes being able to reset her cranks at a stop.

would a recumbent have worked well?
