There is a Raleigh "sport" bicycle listed on ebay, it looks sort of like a classic "Sports" model, but some things are wrong, Shimano 3 speed hub, wrong crank, wrong tire size 26 x 1 3/4, etc.

I know this is being picky, but the 1978 catalogue lists a 'Sports' model, not a 'Sport' model. Given the Shimano 3-speed and the upgrade brakes, I wonder if this was a later model made by Raleigh USA trying to continue the old line?
EDIT: After looking at a couple of other posts, I'm beginning to think the 78 catalogue actually has multiple typos and it should be 'Sport'.

My Raleigh is a "Sports", but it's a much older model.

That's a really nice color...shame he's overestimating it's worth. Maybe the wife told him he could keep it (a barn freebie?) if it didn't sell on Ebay, so he figured, "what the hell...I'll start the bid at a ridiculous price"?:)

The original Nottingham machine was titled "Sports."
You were spot on about this model being a Raleigh USA continuation of the original Raleigh Sports design, however.
The use of primarily Asian components is due to the Taiwanese construction of the frame - everything IS original to the bike shown in the auction.

My buddy just sold a quite old (meaning early 50's) Triumph Sport that was either partially or fully made by Raleigh. It was almost identical than that only in a sort of flat black colour and with a lighting kit. It was a great bike, heavy as hell and a bit "English Postman" in appearance, but fun to ride! And hey, 3 speed hub with a built in generator!
