Fifty Plus (50+) - Old Slow Fat Guys

The Mt Diablo Challenge occurred on Sunday. This is a 10.8 mile climb up 3,249 feet to the summit. The last 1000 feet or so is about 18% and is a real killer.

The FASTEST time to the top was set by Robert Anderson, a 51 year old, this year. 47:28.3 To give you something to think about, the third place man was Kevin Metcalfe, past Motorola pro I believe. And Kevin isn't a youngster at 45.

Here's the really weird thing. - in the top 20 times of the men, there were only 4 men under 30 years old.

I'm trying to decide whether this means that older guys are stronger, smarter and tougher or if younger guys these days are real sissies.

I believe that the first couple of women were in their 40's as well.

On the plus side Adam Hodes, at 13 years old finished in under an hour!

When I looked down the list earlier (the link was posted in the Road forum) I noticed an 80 year old rider made the climb...

I used to live in that area, now maybe I have a reason to go back after I lose weight. :D

not just on bikes...

...we held the Ontario Masters XC Ski Races (for those 55+) on our local trails last year and the leaders were clocking better times than the younger group in the races that were held the previous week...We had skiiers in ther 60's and 70's doing the 10.2km course (one third each up, down, and flat trails) in under 45 minutes.

I think that the guy who suggested that old farts are used to pain because they've been married longer is the perfect answer. Though I don't think I'll use it anytime soon.

Older riders do tend to do fairly well on long slow distance rides, such as double centuries.

Err, I meant the last 1000 feet of ROAD not the last 1000 feet of climbing.

...and I really enjoyed it when I noticed numbers 907 and 908 on the list. The future is looking bright!
