Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Well, not to bring back the original thread... my Dawes lightning DLX ebay bike's bottom bracket took a dump on me after about 1500 miles ... it started creaking at first, then whining ... and then it finally went BOOM and it slid all the way out on the drive side until the crank arm bottomed out on the other side...
I went to the bike shop and picked up a replacement sealed BB from shimano - not sure about what series it is... I paid $ 39.99 for it + 15.99 for the BB tool...
About 20 minutes later I had this to show for it..
1 busted RPM sealed bottom bracket:

1 shimano sealed BB empty box.

1 perfectly smooth running ebay bike !

the shimano BB should easily be good for 10k miles or so.
i've had better luck with shimano BBs than with phil wood's. i've blown two phil wood BBs...one at 7k miles and the other @ 11k. they got squeeky at first and then wobbly.
the UN-72 is XT/ultegra quality.
good luck!

Less than 1500 miles.

Seriously. A Shimano catridge bb is like $20 for LX quality.

Its an estimate, but some people have a cycle-computer that has an odometer on it... they just always add up the miles and keep track of it very easily.......
I know that I ride at least 100 miles per week ... and I've had the bike for more than 4 months.... that is easily close to 1500 miles.

That's pretty ridiculous. It happens to some BB's and doesn't mean all RPM BB's are bad, although I suspect that Shimano UN-72 will last you a lot longer.
As to knowing your mileage, it's all about having a cyclocomputer with an odometer.

No, but this is one of only several for that same model bike. Me thinks they suck.
