Triathlon - Anybody still open-water swimming?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The lakes around here are still suprisingly comnfortable. The one I do most of my OW swimming in (Lake Sammamish) was 68 degrees last Friday. Not expecting this, we wore black neoprene caps, booties and gloves with our wetsuits and were borderline too warm. Looked like a bunch of soggy ninjas, too.:D

Yeah, but I live in Florida. So its never really "cold."
Raced on Sunday and it was an OW swim in a small man-made lake. Water temp was 74. I live in North Texas though. It was still 95 degrees yesterday afternoon.

I enjoy open water autumn swims. There's something peaceful about it. I haven't placed my finger upon it yet.
Of course, that's with a wetsuit.

I don't train in open water... :( There's really no place nearby. Even the lake where the local triathlon is held doesn't allow swimming on non-event days.
But i'm comfortable in open water, once i get over the 5-10 seconds of minor panic at first.

Well if you're not, maybe some reading or watching of open water books and dvd's are the answer this time of year.

Just have to add a little anecdote here. I swam at UCSD in the early 90s and we routinely swam against Pomona-Pitzer college, where Penny coaches (coached?). They were really not much competition, and since their team mascot was the Sagehen, we had a lot of laughs at their expense. Penny was always very cool and over the 4 years we developed a rapport. Come to find out, several years later, that she held the record for the fastest English Channel crossing. (I think it got broken the year after I graduated). I was floored. You'd never have guessed it. Very cool lady.

I did the Splash and Dash in Tempe, AZ this past weekend and the water temp was 78. This coming weekend though, I'm doing the escape from the rock tri in San Francisco and the water will be low 60s, which is actually on the warm side for the bay.
Nova Scotia = no open water swimming after October 1st.
A long course pool helps a little.

At the Galveston Beach Patrol we are still open water swimming. We won't stop open water swimming until Mid November.
