Commuting - I'm not THAT dedicated....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm lucky to have a street level bike room at work. It has rack space for about 30 bikes and it really only fills up on the nicest summer days. The year round bike commuters are few. There's me, a Fixie guy and a guy riding a Folder. That's about it.
This morning, I roll up to the bike room & see Folder Guy pulling up on tiny pink toddler bike w. 10" wheels. It's an actual kids bike.
I'm thinking he found it on the street or whatever & he's storing it in the bike room. I say jokingly "I think it's time for a bigger frame..." He doesn't laugh & says "Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do..." His Folder was broken and he rode the kids bike in.
Not sure how far he commutes (he doesn't say much), but 1 block on that thing & my knees would be crying uncle. So he wins the Dedicated Rider Award, in my book. Also the Crazy Mofo Award.

This thread is worthless without pics! ;)
So where is this mythical work location of yours? The thought of a 30-bike parking area in a NYC building is making me salivate. :D
There's dedication... then there's desperation...
I am not the OP but here's a pic that fits

I can see why he didn't laugh at your comment. He was probably hurting and imagine what people said to him as he was riding.

Just goes to show ya; haunt the garage sales and pick up a $20 junker that is a decent fit and rolls. You never know when you'll need a backup.

I rode somewhere between six and eight miles (round-trip) on a horrid BMX bike. The tires were damn near FLAT, but somehow, I made it!

Oboe, I'll see if the Pink Rider comes in tomorrow. I'm betting he's got his Dahon fixed by then though. I work @ 1515 Broadway for the Viacom Empire.
Why do you need a bike parking space? Aren't you semi-retired? :D

LOL semi-retired from commuting ATM, yes. Funny, your building is a couple of block from where I used to work. You "Lucky" SOB(ike), you can get those good bagels, as well as go to Ollies and Carmine's whenever you want. :D

Alright, Folder guy has been riding this into work ALL WEEK. Finally got a cameraphone pic of it.
The pic really doesn't do it justice. Especially the glittery Barbie crossbar pad. It really is quite pretty.

Yeah, it's like when my son showed up for his guitar lesson with a broken finger and the teacher called all the other teachers in to see how dedicated he was. But actually, it's not dedication, it's addiction.

I think I'd walk first.
You can never have too many bikes. I't always useful to have a backup incase your primary bike is under repair. He could atleast go pick up a single speed huffy from the local MegaMart.
But atleast now I know why these bikes designed for 30lb toddlers are built heavier than a full sized bike. If my bike was the same relative weight as my daughters bike it would weigh over 150lbs.

Dedication...I'm not sure...it looks like a pretty powerful addiction. I know those bikes are strong because I've done tricks on them for my kids. But...walking is almost assuredly faster and a lot easier on your body. I wouldn't want to ride more than a few hundred yards on a 12 inch bike.
I want a picture of him riding it! He probably doesn't live very far away. I can't believe he didn't even take off the training wheels! If he were riding more than a few blocks he would have taken off the training wheels.

I want to call BS on this so badly, but its just so rediculous it might just be true!
:roflmao: Complete with training wheels and all. Normally I'd say not to make fun of the guy, but that would be like ignoring the elephant in the room.

Maybe he lost a bet.
I rode my daughters bike, ONCE. Both her and my chiropracter thought it was hysterical.

My kids always want me to ride their bikes, especially when we have company or something. The think it's hilarious.

I was thinking the same thing reading this thread and then seeing the pic.
I mean, there's no freakin' way a grown man rode that into work. The embarassment alone, never mind the safety factor of being too low for most motorists on busy roads to see (oh, but when they saw you, would they ever remember, eh). The laughter that guy must have heard from peds and cagers never mind the cyclists who passed him. And how many accidents did this guy cause?
I'm trying to picture how you could even ride it...and with a straight face? Does he wear a suit?
Ok, ok, I'm through laughing now....no wait, still laughing...ok, done now.

I sometimes see adult short-distance riders on kid's bikes that fit pretty painfully in Scarborough and Markham. But 10" wheels? Is it really faster than just walking?

I'd have at least removed the training wheels, even more for the efficiency than the image...
Scorer75, your chiropractor was probably laughing imagining all the stuff he was going to buy with the money you'd be spending on him... :D

I haven't heard Lances quote yet "Its not about the bike" nor have I heard that due to kid bike riders economic status he has no money to afford extra bikes and the maintenance on them even though it would cost him under 20 dollars.
What I said above was 100 percent BS sometimes it doesn't seem completly out of place on some of the topics on this forum
oh no I am looking for a IP ban I started a flame ware

Looking at the supplied photo, I wonder where he carries his u-lock while riding?
Maybe it's a short downhill commute for him? That would be faster on that little thing than walking... I'd hate to get going a decent speed or hit a bump though... riding... riding... where's my little bike gone? AAAAARRRGGGG! *crunch*

HAHAHA, that lock probably weighs about as much as the bike. Too funny. :D
+1 lets see a pic of him riding it, that'd be awesome.
I tried riding a bike with training wheels a few weeks ago, i kept trying to turn and almost hurt myself.
if it's downhill and mostly straight he could just stand up and coast. if he keeps riding it, and you find out he's doing it out of necessity and not a lost bet, you should show him to the local goodwill. my dad and i have about 8 bikes between us, and they all have pumped up tires and shift/brake well, its good to have backups.

That's just insane.
And I beat you for the number of bike spaces- we have about 60. They fill up except for on the worst winter days- and there's only about 600 people working in my organisation.

The rear tire has no dirt on it. Are you sure he rode it or carried it... All thought the training wheels look beat-up ...

That little bike makes me laugh every morning.
I thought someone was just stashing it there. I use that bike room nearly everyday, it's always there, in the same spot.
Someone needs to call Letterman and get his camera crew out there some morning.

So how tall is Mr. Barbie Bike? I'm 6'3" and can barely stand to ride most BMX bikes.
You should buy a similar cheap, pink kid's bike, saw the tubes in a straight line and epoxy some hinges on the tubes. Fold it up and take it to work and lock it where he usually locks his bike. Leave a not telling him that he will be more comfortable on that until he gets his real folder back.:D :D :D
Either that, or find a longer seat post that would fit the Barbie bike and change it out while he's at work.

The dream is dead. Folder guy has his regular ride back. But the Barbie bike remains locked to the rack. Oh well, it had it's moment in the sun.
:D
Always have a backup bike in the garage.
