How tough is it for a framebuilder to build a DS bike?

I'm curious if its difficult (as in time consuming to find the right suspension geometry) or not for an experienced framebuilder to build a custom dual-suspension bike frame of good quality.

I've asked 2-3 people privately, received almost random answers back.

It's possible to build one-off FS frames, sure. The biggest construction issue is jigging (fixturing) and having to laser cut or CNC machine the unique parts that go into it. It's not difficult if you have the resources, but as an individual approaching a bike company to make you a one-off, it would cost thousands.

As for the design of a suspension system itself, that's very difficult. There are engineers that specialise in just that. If you can build a double diamond hardtail that does not mean you can instantly build an FS bike, which is why even companies like Seven and IF contract suspension designers to design a bike for them.

A friend built my wifes frame (853 pro team) and is doing a dual suspension MB now for someone. He is a machiest by trade and a CNC runs almost 20 hours a day at his shop so he has those resources. Its pretty neat to watch the whole process. I think we will be building a custom frame for me this winter.
