Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - what to do with shifter braze-ons?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. When building a SS road bike, what should I do with the ugly, exposed downtube shifter braze-ons? Seems like a nice opportunity for some cool, bike-art thing-a-ma-jig.

I had the same problem on a 1970's vintage Trek. I hack-sawed them off and smoothed it out with careful filing. Those sharp chunks of metal sticking out near my knees made me nervous. If I ever turn the bike back into a shifter again I'll get bar-end shifters and a clamp-on fitting on the downtube. Just put some clear laquer or nail polish on the bare metal or it will rust.

SS bikes rule!

Yeah, but I was thinking something like Dice modified (drilled?) to fit over the posts. maybe little fists like the old Ibis, "Hand Job" brake cable holder.

Anyone got the line on a good SS, super-stylish thingy?

I used a set of STI chrome cable ends that I had. Put a little chrome cap over them

put shifters on them and get a track frame

If its a nice frame you leave them there so when you are done with the bike as a conversion you or someone else can still enjoy it. If your worried about your knees get some cable stops to go over them.

If its a POS whatever you want.

Somewhere on FGG I thought I saw a bell that fit those things. That would be perfect for me.

I did it for a month or two and never really used it. I modified a handlebar bell.

BTW...nice 3 year old thread.
