Okay, boys and girls, let's play a game I call "Right Hook Avoidance Baseball". Or, for those across the pond and their friends, "Left Hook Avoidance Cricket", in which case just reverse the directions below and adapt as necessary. Here's how to play.
Whenever you are going straight through an intersection in a lane that allows a right-turn as well, take the full lane.
As you proceed, notice if the person in front or in back of you turns right. If one of them does, congratulations! Your taking the lane has resulted in successfully avoiding one potential right hook -- a single! If both the person in front and in back of you turn right, that's a double! And so on to triples, home runs, maybe even beyond!
They must be adjacent to you or each other to count. The closest person to the front or the back that goes straight ends the count.
Each intersection is one at-bat, and the commute is a complete game. (Not sure how to break it into innings.)
If you want, you can keep stats on your number of each type of "hit" (or, in this case, miss) and total points. You could even calculate runs scored depending on the sequence of types of points. But you might want to wait until you reach your destination to do that - concentrate on your driving!
Enhancements? Variations? Scores?
I got a double today myself! :)
