Introductions - Aloha from Maryland

Hi there. My name's Jurrell and I'm 20.

I've always loved bikes, but I only just brought my first road bike frame this week. I don't have a clue on who makes the frame, neither did the first owner. It's 62cm, the bb is Italian threaded, and the rear spacing is 110mm. The bike is pretty old and it’s made of lugged steel. I have plans on turning it into a single speed/fixed gear by the end of the month with a front brake.

My next purchase is going to be a set of 700cc wheels and finding a 110mm rear track hub (talk about a pain in the neck!!!!!)...if all else fails, I'll stretch out the back spacing to 120mm. I was going to repaint the bike, but the paint wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, so I gave it a shot of clearcoat.

Sorry if I started to blab on, it has been a long day. Anyway I’m looking forward to being here and thanks for the warm welcome.

Hi Jurrell! I'm Dan, 24, and also living in Maryland (I'm a grad student in College Park). I got into bike mechanics a couple of years ago after having several bikes stolen or damaged and being unable to afford paying the LBS. I now own several road bikes, all of which I've built up or heavily customized myself. I'm not sure which I'm more into, riding or bike mechanics.

Do you who built that frame you've got? I really suggest spreading the dropouts to 120 mm, which will make a LOT more hubs available to you... or if you want just be lazy and squeeze open the dropouts by hand when you put the wheel in and out, it works fine for me going from 126mm to 130mm on my road bikes. I have built fixed gear/singlespeed wheels with the Nashbar flip-flop hub (fixed-fixed, $30) and the IRO flip-flop hub (fixed-free, $40 or so). Those are both really great hubs which are really inexpensive.

Hey Dan!

I hope to find out one day. At the moment; I have no clue on who built the frame. The (original?) seat stem that came with the frame says "Built in England", but other than that, I have no idea. I can get some close up shots of the frame if you want. :)

I'll definitely will talk to some guys at "bike dr" about doing the frame. Thanks for the heads up on those 2 hubs, I will be looking into them. I hope to get this frame on two wheels by this weekend. *crosses fingers*

Welcome to BF. Looks like a nice fixie project you've got going. I am right around the corner from you, in Severna Park. My youngest son is your age. If you are looking for people to ride with in the area, I ride regularly and know alot of people, although they're mostly older than you. I'll be on the lookout for you.

I got some horrible news on friday. The frame I brought is garbage. The last owner installed the bb incorrectly and stripped the bb housing...the bb falls right out of the other side.

You were right. The kids didn't know what they were doing...but the manager took care of the bike in 5 minutes.

Lookin' good! What'd you end up doing about the rear spacing? And I hope you're planning to put a brake on that for street use ;)

The guy at the bike shop used his feet to spread the rear, it seemed to have worked lol. I am def puting on a front brake next friday. I can't wait :D
