For newbies or recreational riders, the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign (http://www.atlantabike.org) has a few rides (http://www.atlantabike.org/rides.html) each month, along with Effective Cycling (Bike Ed) classes (http://www.atlantabike.org/ec.html).

Please allow me to add Sorba (http://www.sorba.org/) to branman1986's list. The mountain biking community is quite active in this area.

Is there any good mountain biking inside the perimeter? I've been pondering getting a mountain bike, but I just didn't want to drive a long ways to get to the trails. I like being able to ride right out my door for the decatur road rides.

Beats me. ;) I mostly ride on the roads but I have a good friend who is heavy into mountain biking. Seems to me that he likes to go for long drives to places to ride. I'll send him an email though. I suspect he knows of places inside the perimeter to ride. He's known every trail I've "discovered." :)

There's a bit of good gravel roading, not real single track though. There used to be some great single track mountain biking near Emory but the neighborhoods started to complain about noise, trash, and trespassing. There are several ridable trails if you're sneaky enough. PM me if you want some more specific info.

[edit]: The routes that I'm thinking about are public property and legal. Just difficult to find at times.

there will be some masochists out there, but not many...

I would give it a shot if it were warmer, but as it is, I'm gonna enjoy a nice fire and some hot cocoa and maybe an episode or two from the Lost season 2 DVD set :)

<--- Has the day off ;)

according to weather.com, the rain is supposed to stop between 6pm & 7pm...there might be a fair number of people that end up biking tonight. I might actually take my touring bike for a slow ride on the app & tap short route.

I'm probably going to end up going tonight if anyone else feels like a quick ride in the rain

I am one of the ride leaders for the Tuesday Melton's ride, so I would love to see ya'll there anytime. We start at 6:30 every Tuesday evening (some even in the rain). Just remember that since this is a SBL sponsored ride helmets are required.

I used to ride some over at the Chatahoochie park at 75 & 285, literally 10 ft outside the perimeter. There is the gravel loop and then on the back side of the loop, there was a singletrack trail system that you could do. It was technically a hiking trail, but you could bike it during lower traffic times. They may have started cracking down on it by now, as this was 10 yrs ago.

Does anyone have any additional info on this event?

The Governor's Office Of Highway Safety is staging a Share The Road press event this Thursday morning in downtown Atlanta. Almost every roadway user from 18-wheeler to pedestrian will be represented. One part of the event is a ceremonial race -- a bicycle against a NASCAR car. It would be best to have the cyclist part played by an active racing cyclist in full team kit (with helmet of course) and on their race bike. The cyclist is supposed to win... just like the NASCAR vs SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plates race. If you fit the bill, want to do it, and can be commit to being in downtown Atlanta from 9:30 to 11:30AM this Thursday, October 19, please send an e-mail to: GeorgiaBikesHQ@GeorgiaBikes.org

Hey Tommy! Welcome. Are you coming to the Decatur workshop on Saturday morning?

Does anyone have any additional info on this event?

MT, I haven't heard anything about that. Sounds interesting, though. A bike should beat a stock car no sweat downtown.

Anybody race the Hills race last week?

VanceMac
10-22-06, 11:07 AM
Hi Atlanta... I might be visiting for a couple weeks over the holidays. Two questions:

1) Any recommendations on a bike rental? It doesn't have to be super high end, but it would be nice to use the occasion to test ride a new brand I might consider in the future.

2) Any local club rides you can recommend?

Thanks,
Vance

hey man. www.bikesbl.org has a ton of good rides depending on how fast you want to go.

if you're a racer, there is an airport ride on Sunday, and a ride in Tucker on Saturday for brisk base miles. There is a practice crit(very fast) in Marietta, but I'm not sure if it goes on during the winter. actually it looks like it doesn't

www.sadlebred.com has a lot of other great rides.

let me know what kind of rides you're looking for and I can help you out. Also what part of town?

edit: not sure about the bike rental...I think you can rent bikes at the silver comet depot on the silver comet. If you're an exceptionally tall guy, I may be able to hook you up with a bike.

VanceMac
10-22-06, 02:55 PM
Thanks Bran... those are exactly the kind of rides I'm looking for. Temperature will be in the 80's, right? LOL. I will definitely pack my cold weather gear. I'll be staying in Buckhead, but should have use of a car the whole time.

What are some of the better bike shops in town? Maybe I'll ring them up and see what they have in the way of a demos they might be willing to rent.

branman1986
10-22-06, 04:24 PM
around buckhead and the intown area....ones off the top of my head, peachtree bikes(buckhead), outback bikes, bike south, bicycle link(buckhead), roswell bikes(further north, but probably my favorite shop)...there are others though.

I just wanted to send an invite to all in the Atlanta area to come to Melton's at the Scott Blvd, N. Decatur Rd, and Medlock Rd intersection and ride Tuesday at 6:30. This week's promises to be really cool-- literally-- ride. Just remember, we require helmets and lights.

BTW I will be on my FS mountain bike, so I will be even slower than I normally am.

Thanks,
Tommy

Anyone - other than me - riding the mountain moonshine festival bike ride up in Dawsonville on Saturday? I can't find any online info but they have multiple routes ranging from 20 miles to 62 miles. I've never ridden the course. I hear it's rolling but not too hard on the climbing.

Wow, I feel like I'm late for the party. I love the App&Tapp ride but am stuck in the bike mine till 7:00:( Would anyone be interested in starting a somewhat regular ride on sunday mornings? Something SS/FG/Vintage friendly perhaps?

I plan on doing some decent mileage on my ss/fixie in nov, so let me know if you get something going.

I will probably need to lower my SS gear to like 16 or something, I think it's a 20 now and it's driving me crazy. My fixed is 16 now....I just got it, and the guy who owned it before me switched out all the cogs, so I gotta figure it out. I think the chainring is 48 and the cranks are 170s

Or "Hey y'all", or something!:D

They don't think we are a serious cycling town folks...let's prove 'em wrong, and stay in touch.

So...who's from GA? Who are you? What do you ride? Where are you riding? When's the next meet-up? Why is it 85 degrees in October?:p
Dang, I can't believe I missed this thread!

(It's not 85 degrees anymore, is it? )

I can't believe there are so many from the ATL here. We're really a great bunch of folks!

I'm late as well, but would definately be down for a Sunday Morning ride. I primarily ride a fixie but own a couple of geared bikes as well. Also, if anybody needs a teammate for the Faster Mustache race PM me. I'd be glad to meet up for a beer and a ride before hand to make sure we are, you know, compatible as they say....

I'll be out this sunday morning (10/29) fleshing out a route. If anyone cares to join me we could meet up at the coffee shop next to Bicycle South around 9:30 or 10ish. The route in my head goes from the shop through Emory to Chandler park, cut through Kirkwood to Oakhurst, pass the seminary then tack on the freight room route from Katie Kerr (?). I will be on a fixie, bearded and wool jerseyed:)

I feel special that I'm even later to the party than both Josh and Rachael. I usually show up way too early.
I'm glad we now have a place on here to let local people know about local crap.

By the way,
Anybody race the Hills race last week?
Nope
About 20 people showed up. Mostly MACC riders. Everyone seemed to have fun kicking their own *****es though. I've got about 60 route maps left over if anyone wants one. I'm thinking of selling them on e-bay. People pay for stupid crap on there all the time.

Can be vintage or usable.
Since neither of my bikes is vintage, I'm interested in usable.
Not sure where we could meet. Anyone have ideas? I guess it should be near a decent eating establishment.
