Southeast - Atlanta/Decatur needs a LONG "What's Up" thread too!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Did a slow and easy 22 miles to Stone Mtn and back today. Seems while I've been stuck on the trainer the county has decided to dig up the road in a few places. I wasn't too keen on riding through or over that.

whooo Atlanta! Oh, and to those of you who don't know yet, Decatur Bikes (on ponce, close to jimmy john's) is on scoutmob right now. I just rode back downtown from there, picked up a new rear tire. The owner, Dave, was awesome. Get some deals!

Can anyone at Tech join?

Did 30 miles today including a lap around Stone Mtn. It was my second ride around the mtn since the surgery. A friend of mine caught up with me about half way around and "pulled me" the rest of the way. Thanks John. He's the owner of RoadBikeRider.com (http://www.roadbikerider.com/). He said he's preparing for the California Coastal Classic (http://www.californiacoastclassic.org/). Good luck and have fun. :thumb:

Did the ride to Stone Mtn today. Did a lap and attempted a second lap but my breathing isn't back to what is was yet so turned around in front of the Stone Mtn Inn. :o

On my way home I stopped to help a friend who had hit something in the road and had a huge cut his rear tire. He ended up using both CO2 cartridges trying to fill a leaky spare tube. I offered him my spare tube but it wouldn't work. I have Mavic Open Pro rims and he has deep V rims so the valve stem was too short. He used my cell phone to call for a ride. I think he found someone on the second call. I hope he got home ok.

Did everyone notice that Intown Bicycles (http://www.intownbicycles.com) (my former employer before I retired) is the only Atlanta area shop listed in Bicycling magazine's 100 favorite shops (October 2011 issue). They are the second shop in the listing. The Hub in Athens is the only other GA shop listed. Congrats Mike.

Hi everybody! I'm new to both Atlanta and to cycling. I'm *completely* out of shape (haven't seriously exercised in years), but I have goals of losing my spare tire and riding a metric century within a year.

I don't really have the power to deal with carrying my gut up the rolling hills in ATL yet :o:o (yes, I know, granny gears and high cadence!). I'm looking for a flat'ish bicycle friendly route to build up my base cardiovascular endurance a bit before tackling hills and intervals. I'd like to find something near phipps.

Any suggestions?

Welcome. The bike path (http://pathfoundation.org/trails/atlanta-dekalb-system/stone-mountain/) from the east side of ATL to Stone Mtn is semi-flat. No really big climbs.
If you want to try an "easy" metric (this weekend ;)) here's one.

Thanks, I'll check out the stone mountain route.

I think there are 2 ways I could do a metric this weekend:
1) In something powered by gasoline, or
2) Ending up at the morgue :o

Maybe next year! :)

Next year??? If you feel up to it there are others in the area later in the fall. Check the SBL ride calendar (http://www.bikesbl.org/) and Bicycle Georgia ride calendar (http://www.bicyclegeorgia.com/gac.html).

Anyone riding in the 24 Hours of Booty (http://festivals.stonemountainpark.com/mini-section/default.aspx?season=fall&id=127) tomorrow at Stone Mtn Park? I rode to Stone Mtn today so I'll be there tomorrow (Oct 1) with my camera but not my bike.

I was surprised at the small number of spectators at the start of the 24 Hours of Booty.
Bob Roll was the big celebrity welcoming everyone and was in the leadout group.
Here (http://s373.photobucket.com/albums/oo174/RonH/24%20Hours%20of%20Booty/) are some of the pictures I took at the start of the ride.

Loving this cooler weather, Ron. For the time being I am just using a long sleeve lycra shirt. I guess I need to look into some "real" cold weather cycling clothes this season. The fleece stuff slows me down too much...lol.

Any of y'all riding on the Southern Crescent side of town?

The deed is done!
Peachtree Bikes had a big sale this weekend and I just HAD to check it out.
I've been thinking of getting another bike and so .....
Saturday I went to look at the Felt F5. They didn't have any in my size. The shop manager suggested a Z5 for a smoother ride. Gee, no Z5s in my size either so I test rode a Z4. Wow, what a ride! I really liked it! They were about to close when I finished the ride so told them I'd be back today to do a proper test ride with bike shorts and my pedals and shoes. I did a 20 minute ride around the neighborhood. I gave it two thumbs up. :thumb::thumb: They put the bike on the trainer and after about 45+ minutes of adjustments it was ready to go. The sale price was $800 off the regular price.
It's now in the place of honor -- next to my Litespeed. As soon as we have a sunny day (tomorrow??) I take a few pics and post them.

Anyone in need of a 2011 Specialized Tarmac Elite, 56cm? Got a friend who might want it? It's on craigslist (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/bik/2650181943.html).

You are going to love that Felt. I just got the F5 myself and really digging it, which has been reflected in the mileage.
What are you going to be asking for the Tarmac? I have a buddy searching for a nice bike right now.

Ok! I've figured out how to end the drought we're in. Everyone go out and buy a bike.
I picked mine up Sunday afternoon and installed the bottle cages, computer, etc after I got home. Went out for my first good ride yesterday morning and what happened? The rain began. You know the rest of the story. Looks like I can ride tomorrow. It's supposed to be sunny. :)

I didn't get the full amount I was asking but at least I sold it. Some of the bikes I've sold in the past sat in the shed for 3 or 4 months before they sold. At least I now have money to do some long overdue upgrades on my 10-1/2 year old Litespeed -- new handlebars, stem, seatpost(?), etc.

I'm planning on checking out the Stone Mountain Trail, but I'm a little too far away to ride out there. I'm not sure where to park. I'd like to pick the trail up somewhere in Decatur, maybe near Sycamore and Ponce or the Decatur public library. Can anybody make a recommendation about parking in that area?

dygituljunky
10-21-11, 11:13 PM
Parking anywhere in downtown Decatur can be a bit of a nightmare, depending on when you're there. If you're near MARTA, you can get to downtown Decatur quite easily via the Decatur MARTA station. That's what I recommend...

was good to get out this morning on the commute. 49 deg is ok if you dress right for it. just having a bit of trouble with the sun coming up so late. at 5:30am it's just plain old dark. nice thing though is no buses at the middle school to battle with. just have to deal with them later this afternoon on the way home. oh well. weather was clear and dry. good ride.

RonH

49 degrees? I'm not ready for that yet.
It was 62 when I left for my 38 miler. Had to remove the base layer undershirt once I got to Stn Mtn.
I'll be "ready" for cooler temps in a few weeks. :o

Hello ATL folks, I think this is my first post to this thread but I've been a forum member for a number of years.
I live up in Gainesville, GA and do most of my riding in the in and around Gainesville and Dahlonega. I've ridden the Comet a couple of times with my wife (a novice cyclist) and she loves it. Wouldn't mind riding it all the way to Alabama and back some day. I'm presently riding a steel Land Shark and an aluminum '86 Vitus 979.

My question; with the kids in other states now we thought a Thanksgiving bike ride might be a novel thing to do. However I've checked around and can't find anything within driving distance. Anyone know of one?

Thanks and enjoy the great riding weather we've been having. The summer's heat and humidity almost had me off the bike entirely!

Steve

Hi Steve. It's about time you posted something here. ;)

A Land Shark? I have a friend who has one. Not sure what model, but it's his favorite ride. :thumb:
Got any pics of the Land Shark?

There's a thread in the main Southeast subforum asking about Thanksgiving rides. We're having company that day so I'm not sure if the wife will let me ride before the big feast. :o

The BicycleGeorgia ride calendar (http://www.bicyclegeorgia.com/gac.html) doesn't show any rides until early next spring.
http://atlbike.org has no rides either.
The Southern Bicycle League (http://www.bikesbl.org/) ride calendar has this for Thanksgiving day. Pretty slim pickin's. :o

I've lost weight since mid-summer and when I went riding yesterday my butt and hips were kinda cool without the "extra padding". Today I went to 3 bike shops looking for non-padded liners but no one had them. Everyone had padded. So I went to Kohl's and found some Jockey brand polyester boxer/briefs (with no seam in the "wrong" area) for $0.60 per pair. What a sale!!!
I'll find out tomorrow how well they work.

As a "rider beware" sort of warning. I would certainly call ahead on any of the rides listed on SBL to be sure that the details posted are accurate, especially as it pertains to the type/speed of the ride. I went to one of the Vinings ride that was listed as beginner pace, and had to be brought back in to the shop by a kind fellow. Apparently the beginner ride had ended some weeks prior I was not aware in spite of making a call about it. I doubt it would be an issue to any seasoned rider, but thought I might mention it for the folks lurking in the background.

I rode to Stone Mtn Friday and yesterday (see the Did You Ride Today thread). I was over-dressed for the weather Friday and slightly under-dressed yesterday. :o After the rain today, tomorrow and maybe Tuesday I think I'll know what to wear.

I was able to get out a few times. I got a nice 50 miler through Red Top Mountain in on Saturday.

Met up on saturday with a mechanic at the lbs to trade some parts. I traded my full Shimano Sante gruppo off of my '88 Nishiki for some 9 spd dura-ace and ultegra parts as well as everything I needed to get my new Fuji Track pro frame together. Carbon fork, carbon stem, Fizik Gobi saddle, sram rival crankset, and some bontrager racelite bars. :D
