Southeast - Atlanta/Decatur needs a LONG "What's Up" thread too!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

hey...
do any of you guys volunteer for SOPO or the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition? I was interested in both those things and wondered if anyone else volunteered for them now or ever, and what they thought about it.
thanks

I volunteer at CommuniCycle. Some of the SOPO folks came over to help launch the Clarkston CommuniCycle location and seemed like decent folks. That's the best insight I have for you, though.

I used to work for ABC (2004-2007) before I retired. Volunteering for them could be stuffing envelopes, working a table at an event, doing bike surveys, or any number of things.
If it sounds like something you'd like to do, give it a shot.

Hey metro-Atlanta folks, I've come to the conclusion that I have too many projects and not enough time so if anyone wants a couple of old frames free to a good home just drop me a PM.
I have Maruishi RoadAce 303 Frame & Fork 25"
and the infamous Bridgstone Kabuki with the pressed aluminum lugs. 21"
Both free to anyone who would use them the Marusishi is in good shape, the Kabuki is pretty ugly but both would make a fine fixie or SS which was my plan when I picked them up at a garage sale but they've been sitting untouched for more than a year.
Hey bikebuddha. Haven't seen you on here in a while. Don't be a stranger.

Yeah I've been slacking I just barely made 1000 miles this year and it shows around my waistline. :)
Hey Guys.
I've been lax...quick follow up to my post before Thanksgiving. I contacted as many people as I had email addresses for, made up a few quick maps and even T-shirts and started my own Thanksgiving Day ride. We had eleven people (with less than 24 hours notice) and perfect weather and got everybody home in time for the bird and the pie. Everyone indicated they wanted to do it again next year. Uh-Oh. :) A couple of pics at my facebook link.

Looks like you had a good time. Sorry I couldn't join you. We had friends from out of town for the day so I was stuck at home. :o
Just got an email from Mike at Intown Bicycles. He's adding Gunnar framesets to his lineup. Gotta love it. :thumb:

I hope no one minds a little political action message (if y'all have a problem with it, let me know and I'll delete this post):
I received the following in my mailbox this morning from the National Complete Streets Coalition:
The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will consider an amendment offered by Alaska Senator Mark Begich on Wednesday morning to provide safe and adequate accommodations for all users in all federally-funded street projects. This means safer roads for everyone, including those who walk, bike, ride transit, or drive cars.
Your Senator is a member of this Committee, and we need you to voice your support TODAY for the Senator Begich amendment to S. 1950, "safety for motorized and nonmotorized users."
This is the first time in over six years that our federal representatives will take a vote on Complete Streets language -- take action now!
And the link referenced in the email was: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/7093/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=9030
No one has posted here since Dec 13. Anyone riding or is it too cold and rainy?
I haven't been out since Christmas eve day. Maybe the wind won't be too brutal today and I can get out for a quick ride. :o

Too much rain.
Family in town.
Christmas and Christmas shopping.
And now cold.
I've been off since the 20th (use it or lose it) and haven't been able to get out. Its depressing.
The wind was too much yesterday and it looks like today will be windy (and cold) too. Can't ride tomorrow because I have yoga. That's another story. Friday is supposed to be warmer and only light wind. :)
Maybe I'll set up the KK Road Machine today and burn up the living room while I watch another episode of Luther.

Hope to ride tomorrow and Sunday. Will definitely set up the KK Road Machine for next week. Going to be way too cold (for me) to be outdoors.
I'm not looking forward to the cold either. And I have an appt with the folks at the Apple Store Genius Bar on Tuesday morning (brrrrrrr) to talk about iCloud. Do I really want to wander around outside in those temps???

Went out for a few miles today. Finally. Feels really good to have gotten out. I've been horribly slack with exercise during the holidays.
Which Apple Store? Lenox or Perimeter you can park in the deck, probably up close and sprint in to beat the cold. Shouldn't be too crowded on Tuesday.
Lenox. I'll probably freeze solid walking out the car in our carport.
Did my usual Stone Mtn ride today. Only did 2 laps. Riding every 5-6 days because of rain, wind, etc. really affects the leg strength and stamina. :o

A few miles is better than no miles. :) I had to ride on 01/01 hoping it will set the tone for the new year.

it's not much but I have 39 miles this year so far. I got a garmin 305 back in october and it have been so easy to keep track of everything now.
Good to hear from you jason.
You're doing better than me. Between the rain or wind or cool/cold temps I haven't been out yet this year. My last ride was on Dec 31. I've been on the trainer twice. Today is supposed to be "warm" so I'll take the Felt out for a spin. :)

I didn't read through all 53 pages but - - I am likely to move to Atlanta this summer to attend Emory. I currently live in Portland, OR and am searching places I can move that will be an easy transition, ha! Any thoughts on easy commutes to Emory, all while being a young, safe neighborhood, with great pubs, vegetarian food options, maybe a whole foods and backyards for my dog. Picky enough? :) Any advice is welcome, I would be willing to give up a few of those.

wow that was fun... not. Pea Soup fog is hairy to ride in. Left on my commute thinking hmm... little foggy this morning. got out aways and realized it was really really thick. like riding inside a ping pong ball. bad idea bad idea bad idea... thankfully I had no problem but it did take me alot longer as I had to truly slow down. Even a slow 10 MPH speeds I was out running the bike lights. hairy bit that.

Depends on your housing allowance. Around Emory is nice but expensive. Virginia-Highlands is a good area. Decatur is nice also but a bit farther.

Haven't been out this year with the crappy rain. Did set up the trainer I got for Christmas and rode a couple days last week. Had this DVD 'Sufferfest', I wanted to smack the guy leading it.

The nearest Whole Foods to Emory is at Briarcliff Rd. and LaVista Rd. Lots of housing options in that area.
Once you determine where you'll be living we can map out a route for you to get to Emory. Lots of bike commuters around the Emory campus.

Check out Decatur GA. Great pubs and fairly close to campus. Very easy commute. There are many area's close to Emory Campus if you can find a rental. Fierce competition I would think. North Decatur and Clairmont Road has small shopping area with one of the best healthy food stores in the area. There are FREE bike friendly shuttle buses from campus to Decatur now. http://emory.transloc.com/ has maps of routes. I use it all the time. I don't live near campus but still commute about 10 miles on residential back streets from the North end of area. There is also the Virginia-Highlands area that is hopping with pubs and great food just south of the campus. Google the area and see what's out there. I am assuming you plan to ride.

Hey all,
I am looking for a group ride this weekend. I am very new to road cycling, in fact this will be my first group ride so I would want it to be casual but a moderate length. Just for reference my best ride so far (yesterday) was 50mi on Silver Comet with an avg speed of 18.2mph, so the group ride should be slower and shorter than that. ;)
If you have any tips for finding group rides please share.
thanks and I look forward to meeting some of you guys.
Edit:
I live in downtown by Inman Park/L5P, but don't mind packing the bike in the car and traveling for a ride.
Welcome.
Check out the Southern Bicycle League (http://www.bikesbl.org) ride calendar. The link is on the left side of the main SBL page. I believe you'll have to sign up to see the ride info. No big deal. They just like to know who and how many folks are online.

...places I can move that will be an easy transition, ha!
I moved from NYC a few years back and ended up in Grant Park after a stay in the East Lake/Oakhurst area. How close do you need to be to Emory? Will you be riding or driving to school? I think anything on the eastside would be cool. I would check out the Cabagetown, reynoldstown, edgewood area. You will find cheaper rents, younger folks, backyards, and nightlife plus you would be close to MARTA. Reynoldstown even has a cafe/pub/dog park (http://www.parkgrounds.com/). Little 5 Points has a food coop (http://www.sevananda.coop/) and those neighborhoods are not too far from a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Plus you've got the upcoming completion of the first Beltline (http://beltline.org/) section which pretty much connects all the above mentioned shops and neighborhoods. Grant Park as a nice Farmer's market (https://www.facebook.com/grantparkfarmersmarket) May through December too. Decatur is pretty cool but pricy and skewed slightly older. If you end up over close to Emory or Decatur check out the Your Dekalb Farmer's Market (http://www.dekalbfarmersmarket.com/).
Riding in these areas can be really nice as long as you stay away from the busy car routes which is not too hard once you get the lay of the land. I ride all over these areas regularly and quite enjoy it.

Seems like Atlanta is for sure our top pick. Thank you so much for giving me all this information and the hyperlinks. I like the idea of closer to Atlanta (rather then Decatur) because more than likely my S.O. will be working downtown. I also plan on commuting by bike. It will take some time to learn the best routes and what not, but eh, it's the same in a car too. Thank you so much! I am so glad to see that Atlanta has so many opportunities.

Cheapskate alert. Where can I park near St Mountain Park to avoid paying entry/parking fee? I know I can ride bike into park for free.
bg, you can park at most of the churches in Clarkston or Tucker that are along the bike path. If you want to park nearer the mtn you can park in the Marta lot in Stone Mtn. Lots of cyclist and walkers park there.
It's on 4th St, 1/2 block south of E. Mountain St. You can then ride the 2-3 blocks to the west pedestrian gate to get into the park.
See the maps.

That was fun. It really was a nice day. Had expected hills but I was still surprised by that 2 mile climb backside of the park. Will definitely be doing this again soon. Thanks Ron for the parking suggestion. It was perfect. Easy in/out.
Hi all you ATL folks. I'm down here in sunny Florida.
Did my first ride of the month on the Withlacoochee Trail. Awesome. No need for arm or knee warmers or base layer undershirt.
I'm not used to riding virtually non-stop for many miles (you know in Atlanta you have to stop for a light or cross traffic every few blocks so you get to "rest") so only did 32 miles with the headwind and crosswind we had today.
Sorry you're having such crappy weather in ATL.
It was 83F and sunny while I was riding along the Withlacoochee Trail today. :D
