New to the area, and while I'm mostly working from home this year I still try to ride everyday to a coffee shop or on errands, etc.
My question is: Is there anyone involved in grass roots political action concerning the fact that there is not one inch of painted bike lane in the city of indianapolis. I know about the couple of trails, and they are really nice, but it seems that with the size of the city and the generally mild weather (moved from minneapolis) more money needs to be spent on bicycle issues. The "cycling" map that the city provides lists 4 lane roads with no shoulder and 55mph+ traffic as "bicycle routes". It has been a long time since I have been nervous about riding in traffic (ride through a couple of minneapolis' winters in snow and with it totally dark for your ride home after work and one tends to get a thick skin) but these roads are just not safe at all.
I feel like I have gone back in time 12-14 years to when it was rare to see other cyclists on the minneapolis streets. Now Minneapolis is a great cycling city and the more bicycles on the road the more people in cars understand that they have to share the road. I want to see this happen in my new home but I haven't found out about any groups actively engaged with commuting issues, or even know the structure of gov't enough around here to send a letter.
