Northeast - Ocean City Maryland - how bad on tires?

I'm going to the beach next week and wanted to take my road bike and ride from OC to Rehobeth Beach and back in the mornings. Last time I rode my bike at the beach I remember sand spurs giving me flats all the time. Would this be the same for Ocean Highway? Any experienced OC riders let me know what I should expect.

Just got back from vacation in Rehoboth. I rode 1 south (not quite as far as OC) and didn't have any issues, other than boredom.

I have Bontrager Hard Case tires on my bike.

I guess that is a boring ride!

I lived in OC for a few years, you have to worry more about glass, and idiot tourists who cannot drive and dont realize other people use the road :) I never had any real problems with them. Have fun!

I've ridden from O.C. to Rehobeth and back a couple of times. No problem since there's a bike lane most of the way and it's usually in good shape. They are/were doing some road construction on the bridge just before the MD/DE border on DE 1/Coastal Hiway, so be careful there.

I agree with ohmyspokes route 1 is a boring ride.

The nightlife in Rehoboth was fun, provided you go to the "right" bars - went down there on a business trip with a bunch of people several years ago, and had a blast. Watch out for the upside down pink triangles...unless you swing that way, of course. And not that there's anything wrong with that. My boss didn't believe me, until we walked in. The look on his face was priceless.

I agree, glass is a bigger problem. Route 1 boring, but flat and fast. But come on, the beach, sun, bikini's.....the ride is only one part of the day. lol

Just a piece of advice - go early. Once the cars and transit busses start in OC, its a pain! I have probably ridden thousands of miles on route 1 (more around Dewey, Bethany, rehoboth area) and can only remember 2 flats - probably glass. The tailwind is great but I've ridden some nasty headwinds there! If you're local I'm sure you heard about the Hopkins doc who was hit (and killed) there last weekend. Be careful.

there is a new bike/ped 12.5 mile path (gravel) from rehobeth to lewis, de to get around some of the construction on rt 1, if you are in that area! we recently came back from a short vaca, drove down to assateague pt. the roads along the way that i saw (de/md) were much better than nj with true bike lanes, bike inclusion, and bicyclists following rules (bicycle driving). kevlar lining has paid for itself (for me)regarding broken glass/flats. have a fun time, spin safe!

I have been doing that run about six times a year for the last decade or more, and I've never gotten a flat. I dodge the occasional beer bottle shards, but the Adopt-a-Highway folks keep the wide shoulder picked pretty darn clean.

It's better once you get out of OC. The bike lane in OC is nice and safe, but the stoplights are a drag.

The route is long, flat, and plenty-of-it. If you find it boring, make friends with somebody who spins at your speed on the first day, and coordinate a ride time with them for the next day. Sometimes by Wednesday I've managed to assemble a group ride of six guys for the rest of the week.

Stop at the Fractured Prune on Rte. 1 between Dewey and Rehoboth for a couple freshly-fried doughnuts that will make you ride back there the next day even if it's raining.
