I have 2 bikes.

My primary commuter has a rack.

My road bike does not.

In the case of a mechanical problem with my commuter, is the arkel bug comfortable to wear as a back pack for the commute in to work?

my commute is 15 miles one way.

15 miles is sort of long, I would wear it for that ride only if I didn't have a lot of weight in it.

Get a seat tube rack for the road bike. The Bug is fine to wear on short walks around campus/work but if I had to walk a longer distance (>1 mile) I would definitely opt for something with a hip belt and sternum strap. And on the bike that goes double I think.

Yeah, I'd second that emotion. A Bug is a great hybrid, but not spectacular at being a backpack. Good, but not great.

Keep it light and you shouldn't have any significant problems from rubbing or the pack trying to un-curve your spine. If you do, then maybe try to rig up waist and chest straps for it.

I am thinking about rigging up a chest strap should I get am Arkel Bug. I should not need it often, maybe never so the Arkel bug may work the best.

Mostly I need a change of clothes, shower supplies, food, and maybe a book or 2.

I use a Bug with a rack (the Bug is great on a rack OR on your back walking), but a cycling specific Deuter Trans Alpine 25l backpack when on my bikes with no rack. It is much more comfortable than the Bug while riding as it is designed for cyclists.

If you plan on riding a bike wearing a backpack, there are better options than the bug. I have the bug only, and instead of buying a second backpack, I bought a second rack. :)
