Found a neat old Viscount today at a church sale for 3 bucks. Anyone have any history on these ? Has solid rubber Zeus tires. Fairly large bike with bar end shifters.

I'm thinking the fork deal is an "urban legend"... While I'm sure that enough of them broke to cause a lawsuit and recall, most were in use for many years... I've had two early lugged Lamberts and a Viscount, all with the "death fork", and all seemed fine to me. A good friend that I sold an early Lambert to, still rides his. A general rule of thumb may be, that if you're over 175 pounds, keep a close eye on it for cracks. If under 175, I think give it the once over, then ride it. Maybe I like to live dangerously...

How can I tell if the forks were replaced with the replacements that were put out ? Mine are half red and half chrome. Any value to these bikes ? It's a little large for me but I thought about cleaning it up and trying to get something for it. Thoughts ? Thanx.

The original "death fork" was an all chrome looking aluminium piece, sloping crown.
If your's is painted and has normal fork crown (not cast one piece) you should be alright.
The replacement fork was a chrome Tange fork.
Btw I commuted for quite a while on my death fork and it was fine until the day
I replaced it (I liked the look of the tange fork better than the original).

If it's the same Viscount I'm thinking of, your fork is likely a replacement... The "death fork" was polished aluminum.

The ones that were the "death" forks were aluminum. Check with a magnet.

Just listed it. If anyone is interested, no reserve. Great retro daily rider. Thanx for all your help and yes the "death forks" have been replaced somewhere down the line. Ebay #300035710277

Some was selling one on chicago CL for 225 which seems very steep for an old entry level bike. They are good bikes with an intresting history. Built out of left over aeorspace steel how cool is that?
