Introductions - New from Philadelphia

Hey all, just chiming in.. and wondering if someone can help.

I am a bike noob when it comes to talking about them. I been mountain biking for a bit now and I got too good for my bike. I wanna remove the two high gears so I can get better clearance. How can I do this for the cheapest price possible? And is there any cheap ways of keeping the gear on? My friend cut his gears off, and it pops off every once and a while. I want to replace mine, not cut them (to go back to stock later).

I know to search, I am part of many forums, but all the lingo and vocabulary here is above me. I tried searching and just got confused.

If I read that right, 1x1? Thats a little extreme. I would like to keep it 1x7 personally. :D

I dunno, a fixie SS with the right gearing is a pretty awsome ride for conditioning. You can also get it set up with a flip flop hub so the if you want a freewheel, all you have to do is droop and turn the rear wheel around so the other sprocket is on the drive side!

If the chainrings (the cogs at the front) are riveted together, you will have to buy a new crankset for bolted chainrings, and a granny gear. You should try buying a used set from your friendly bike shop. You will also need to buy a crank extractor tool. The chain dropping is caused by the bad chainline between the granny gear and the smallest cogs at the back. If you get this you should put the middle chainring on for use with the smallest gears at the back. You should also look into "bump guards" (I dont know the proper name) that fit under the bottom bracket that stop the chain rings hitting logs when you go over them. Ask on the MTB section for more info.
