Foo - So we're all here, standing in the library.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Wouldn't you think it was odd if you were standing in a library and someone came up to you and asked where all of the books are? That's sorta what happens here at bikeforums every day, almost every minute. These forums are great there is no doubt, but when someone comes here looking for information, 8 or 9 times out of 10 the answer is found by googling.
This might have been a bit understandable five years ago, because the learning curve is obviously very large for the internet and search engines. But for crying out loud, this is 2006 and Google is a part of the dictionary now.
It just occured to me ahwile ago how stupid this is. A guy asked a question about what wax type lubes are. So I googled "wax chain lube." Then i gave him the link. I think that there needs to be a national deadline declared where it is no longer legal to ask people questions that can be answered by googling.
Or maybe the new ettiquette should be that nobody ever responds to such questions. Sure everybody feels smart when they google something and then give the answer to some sorry sap, but enough already. If YOU had to google it than you are no smarter than the moron that you are googling for. So what is the point???????

I agree... Except that this is a community of sorts, and in a community you can ask people stuff. I can Google a lot of things. But if I have a question, I should be able to ask it. There should be some kind of discussion, snarky answers, comedy, a few real answers, etc. That's the fun.

You recall a few years ago when one of the "in" acronyms was RTFM (i.e. "Read the f**king manual.")? Maybe someone needs to come up with a similar one for this instance.
I don't understand what the problem is. Most questions I see asked are for peoples opinions or experiences with something. If you don't know the answer don't google for it, let someone else answer it!
Sure I can google up anything I want, but the internet is complete anonymity, at least with a forum, you can come back and say, that didn't work, now what.

So Portis, just how much Google stock do you own?
Why not shill for Yahoo! or ask.com or one of the plethora of other search engines? Why Google?

If you dont want to be part of a community and instead wanna be that ****ing idiotic ******* who tells everybody to go google then go on IRC. Every ****tard on the ****ing face of the earth from every walk of life who enjoys sitting and telling people to "GO GOOGLE IT" is on there. You would fit right in and you all could have google searching circle jerks.

So, then, what kind of library are we in? Any sexy librarians snapping their rulers and adjusting their buns looking for a good time in the stacks? I need some atmosphere before I can continue with this thread.

The main issue I have with people asking questions that could be found by searching google is when they ask a question that has nothing to do with the forum in which they're asking. Like if I were to ask an automotive question in a bike forum. Or a bike question in a gaming forum. That and when people ask for legal advice in a forum primarily comprised of young men between the ages of 18 and 23.

C'mon, nothing is quite as fun as being on a message board that revolves around being an a-hole (one of my other haunts), and have someone ask for relationship or health advice.
Usually the relationship thbreads end in people demanding for the person to post pics of their SO before they will do anything, and once it's posted they then demand "nudez" before doing anything, or they just sit there and talk trash about the person in the pic. For the helth threads, they just start telling them they have all kinds of random diseases. Like when one guy made a thread about excessive backhair....someone told him he had Ebola.
....I love that place, it's exactly how I would imagine a room full of morons if handed large amounts of disassociative psychoactive drugs, and an endless supply of roman candles and other assorted fireworks.

I think that part of it is that it's only a small share of the people that are asking questions instead of cruising around, reading through the stacks. In a physical library you'd see the people thumbing through books and taking notes, here it's being done without anyone's knowledge. I learned a lot by reading through countless threads on this site, but also want to interact as it is a community, so I'll post a question or comment here or there.

Maybe you should Google what internet forums are all about. You might find this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum

People don't mind answering questions. It's only when the poster has clearly done ZERO legwork on their own, that search the forums moniker comes in.

yep, let's all agree to not interact with people anymore, I mean some people have allready exchange thier real friend for internet friends, so while at it.. let's just count on google for all questions we might have.
People wise up!!! do not ask anything that could be googled, asking others will put them out of thier way and could dangerously add a human touch to a conversation!!

 a little harsh but "yea"
I'm all for human touch. What i'm not for, is laziness. If I can find the answer in 2.5 seconds using Google, than you likely can too. Those are the posts i'm referring to. Using your logic we should never quit tying our kid's shoes.
IN reality there comes a time where you have to do things for yourself.
