Southern California - CRYSTAL LAKE PART ONE - December 17th

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

CRYSTAL LAKE, PART I
Weather LINK: correction www.wrh.noaa.gov/lax (http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lax)
(go below in link and click on Los Angeles, Oxnard)
December 17, 2006
Arrive: 7:45 a.m.
Roll: 8:00 a.m.
Meet: Encanto Park located at http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?ed=xs5aca160Sz8whY9JpTVJJGfFQEpRZ5T7g1tMfSQX8izGEQsqIGang--&name=Encanto+Park&csz=+CA&country=us&cs=10&qty=12&ds=g&gid1=23114135.
Route Slips: Will be provided the morning of, but here is a link to GMAPS for a peek at what you're getting into: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=564455
NOTE: Freezing conditions, ice or rain cancels ride. I will reschedule should this happen.
STATS: Approx. 64 miles to the top of 39 and back – 76 if you continue up to AC. Roughly 7,000 feet of climbing give or take, but no less than 5,000.
Route: From Encanto, quick jump SGRT Bike path to HWY 39. We will then climb up 39 to the top. Faster climbers will have the option to continue an extra 12 miles (6 up and back) to Angeles Crest. Slower riders will stop at the top of 39 (you’ll know when you’ve hit the top). We will head back down, over East Fork, up little GMR (still East Fork but leads to GRR), down Big GMR, over Sierre Madre to Encanto Park. I will be mapping this out and posting a link soon.
Water: THERE WILL BE ONE STOP ON THE WAY BACK. So, if you plan to ride up to AC, please bring extra water. It shouldn’t be hot, so two water bottles or a camel back should be okay to the top of 39 (I climbed it with that much water in heat and I’m still here). I will also try to figure out a way to plant some extra water at the ranger station, but I need some time on that. However, you know your water needs, so please plan accordingly!
Fuel: Bring it. Although, food is sold at the cafe along the route (our water stop, FYI).
Dress: Expect cold and dress accordingly, but layer. With no shade, it could get toasty on the climbs. The descents could be downright chilly!! Closer to the date, I will provide a brief weather report update.
Lunch: As we pass EF Café on the way back, you will be able to purchase snacks (bring cash). For those of you who have the time after the ride, we’ll grab burritos at Green Onion on Huntington Blvd.
Time: Well, how long does it take you to ride 64 miles with upwards of 5K feet of climbing? Expect at least 5 hours.
THIS IS A NO-DROP RIDE! No one will be left behind (and that means that you guys cannot run off and leave me either!:p )

I'm a probably for that.
Combined with the burrito ride and the xmas trip I'll get at least a 600 mile month, even with a week off at xmas.

Okay, sorry, since I've never been on any of the roads over there.... you say we start at GMR... does that mean we go up GMR and then turn somewhere? Is there an elevation map of this ride somewhere? I guess I'm just looking for either something to compare it to or more details about difficulty.
Sorry, I might like to try but am a bit afraid its out of my league.

I will have a better idea by Dec 10 - for the century...

No need to apologize, Trac. You have every right to ask. I'm not sure how to get an elevation map...anyone else know where I can get this?
Also, Trac, I'm happy to talk to you about the ride in detail if you'd like. :)

I don't know if you have used any of the google-kit map sites. The easiest one to use to get your elevation map is
http://www.toporoute.com/routePlanner.html
Drag the map until you get your area centered and then use the zooming tool on the left. You may have to go back and forth a bit.
Once you get your starting point, left click it. Make sure the "Follow Road" box is checked on top and just keep clicking the route. When done, click the "Distance/Elevation" button to get your elevation chart.
There are others, another popular one is http://www.routeslip.com/
But they do not have that very important 'follow road" option. According to the routeslip guy, that particular feature is outside of the google terms. RouteSlip.com does provided a total elevation per ride. That is a nice feature but I just hate clicking at every turn. Try them both and see what you like

Thanks, Jim! I'll see if I can map on one of these this weekend. GeoMaps does not provide elevation (at least I dont' think so).

I have a mental elevation map of that ride. Starting in Glendora at the gate is 1300, top of Big GMR is 3600, down to East Fork at 2000, down to Hwy 39 at 1300, up to Crysrtal Lake 5200, up to Angeles Crest 6700. Back down to East Fork 1300, up to GMR at 2000, up to top of GMR 3600, down to Glendora, at 1300. All these elevations are from sea level. You add it up. V.B.

That's quite a mental elevation map., I can't even remember my address. Well, I did live through the 70's so that explains some of it.

I can't add all that up...it's like one of those mind-boggling math questions on standardized school tests: If M.E. actually attempts to climb 1300 feet, plus an additional 3600 by the top of GMR, but then has to come back down 2000 plus an additional 1300 from East Fork to HWY 39, X 4 + 1,500 to AC, but - 1,500 if only to the top of Crystal Lake, then how many times will M.E. throw up before she comes back down 39, subtracting 1,300 ft of gain, + 3,600 - 1,600 ft before she can get back down GMR at sea level?
So, Bob, what's your point.

The way it's looking, I'm going to be the only female (unless I can talk my friend Laura into it) and it's going to be really cold. I doubt any of you men will be behind or to the left of me. Just do me a favor and send the firemen to scrape my frozen body off the side of the highway, will you? :o
Don't underestimate yourself, M.E. It's not as if the Y chromosome encodes a climbing gene, you know.

Vertical Bob wants to go up there this Saturday, 10/14, starting at 8:00 at Encanto Park. Any interest?
Would Vertical Bob be interested in doing Baldy Challenge (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=221241) with us instead? :D I know the start time is a bit early for him, but some of us could use a little extra available daylight.

He doesn't mind an early start, but that's a long drive for those of us living in the SFV, especially after the ride.

I'm not sure I want to tackle 39 this weekend as I already have a climbing ride lined up, but depending on whether my ride is on Sunday or not, and I have an open Sat., I may just be foolish enough to ride 39 with Bob. I'm NOT foolish enough to try the Baldy challenge. I've looked at the list of riders (and I believe there are no women on that one either...why is that? :p ) and read the comments from others. Too intimidating for me, for sure!
