Touring - Ideal Tour

Here's the question: If you could spend one or two weeks touring anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?

I'm afraid the question is fundamentally flawed. My ideal tour would span something more like 2 years.

For 2 weeks, probably the Northwetern US, in early fall.

Scotland. Start in Edinburgh and go around to Inverness, then over to Oban (Stay there at least 3 days and make the trip to Iona and Staffa) and return to Glassgow. Lovely country. Lovely people. Why? Because I went there once and would love to go back.

Second choice: Vermont. I hate trees, really I do. I'm a plains kid. If I can't see 100 miles at a glance, I think the world is closing in on me. But Vermont is beautiful! I spent 2 summers working there and absolutely love the area. Make sure you do the Causway Trail out to Hero Island. It's the only place in the world you can ride in the middle of a big lake;)

1-2 weeks is pretty short, so I'll have to pick places I could realistically fit into that time period

Places I've been and would go back to again:
-- England and Wales, especially around the Hay-on-Wye area.
-- Tasmania
-- Canadian Rockies

Places I've never been but would like to go:
-- Japan
-- pretty much anywhere in Europe, but I'd have to pick a specific, relatively small, area to fit into the time period
-- Brazil (I'd only be able to do a very small portion of it, of course)
-- Prince Edward Island
-- Vancouver Island

New Zealand--South Island

I agree with the Vermont assessment--but then I live in Vermont. These are all great ideas. Thanks. (Keep them coming...)

Since you live in Vermont consider doing the Blue Ridge Parkway for the entire 430 miles. It runs through some of the most beautiful scenary in the world and there's easy access to anything you need.

Of course you'd have to do it in late May before school lets out.

The Alpes. Classic climbs, great scenery, good food and wine and plenty of pleasant towns and villages.
The French Alpes are probably the favourite. I had some fun in the Slovenian and Austrain side.

What about Sicily? Has anyone done that?

I just got back from doing Cicilismo Classicos Bike Across Italy

This was our first supported trip, took years of saving. Next up will
be Backroads Cal Wine Country Tour. Cycling France is after that,
no idea which tour company or trip tho.

We do unsupported trips, credit card touring. But I am afraid those
supported tours really spoil you. All you carry is a rack pack with snacks and
a repair kit, if you get seriously lost, they come and find you.

If you want to do a semi-unsupported tour of the Loire Valley, get in touch with the Anjou Bike Center. They'll supply maps, bikes, and arrange for B+Bs. After that you're on your own.

Scotland, France, Wales, Italy or Switzerland.

Peru, maybe Equador and Chile too. Mainly Peru - I think the allure to me is that I have not been exposed to it's culture and it strikes me as being majestic in a way. Mountains, countryside, the culture, etc.

Anywhere in Canada exept southern Ontario.
