View Full Version : how'd you come up with your ID?

Im from a very small town, where everyone knows everyone but somehow they rarely refer to me as Karen. They always refer to me as "ha! that blonde running girl?" or "ha, that blonde biking girl?"
it's always been as if I dont even have a name... so on here I kept tradition and combined both names they gave me.
what does your ID mean to you and why did you pick it?

A loooooong time ago, when websites first started making everybody register with a username, I figured out very quick I couldn't keep remembering different names. So I decided I needed to use one name and stick with it.

Here's the story how I originally came up with the name:

A couple years ago some friends and I were in need of a name for our adventure racing team.

I felt the name needed to be particularly irreverent, and nonsensical...so Team Snuffleupagus it was.

When I was just starting out bike racing, my team had a coach who was very talented, and a German emigrant. He raced in Europe, and was retired in Phoenix, and was lots of fun to work with. He didn't like the fact that the Phoenix area was so flat, so most of our training was in the foothills and mountains surrounding the metro area. So, his main concern with us was that we were in the correct gear at ALL times, and would ride along in his car (his wife driving the Mercedes) with us, constantly telling us to "shift! shift! shift up! shift down! (think German acsent here). To this day when I start to climb a hill I can hear his banter in my head, and I'm a better rider from his coaching (I was then too). So, we called him?, you guessed it, he became know as Shifty. My screen name is a tribute to my first, and most wonderful cycling coach.

I came up with mine because mine from the are of Seattle I lived in (Northgate) when I first got on line.
It was because I could not use my name (David) or nickname (Chia, another long story) without having a bunch of numbers after it.

guess I should change it to neverettguy (I live in North Everett) now :P

Mine comes from an old British radio comedy program caled "The Goon Show." It was actually before my time, but my parents had a lot of recordings from the show, and I used to listen to them all the time. There was a character named bluebottle who I always related to in a strange sort of way. He was a little....off. Anyway, like KT, I can't remember hundreds of different identities, so I've stuck with this one most everywhere.

Mine's not that exciting. I explained this once a long time ago somewhere here on BF.

17 is my favorite number. It's just come up a lot in my life: two apartments have been #17, One of my favorite local race drivers number was #17, The day my plane landed back home in the U.S. after Desert Storm was April 17th, etc... there are many instances...but suffice it to say that 17 comes up a lot in my life. I even had to use the number 17 in my Ebay I.D. because it was the first number I could use/that was available in front of the word I wanted for my I.D.

Cycle...or more accurately cycling....is one of the things I love to do most and this IS a cycling website, so cycle17.

Serendipper
10-06-06, 04:56 PM
I have a condition known as synesthesia. I hear colors and shapes, smells create images, and I can hear things most people see. I've been this way my entire life, coupled with mild autism (Asperger's Syndrome).

Anyway, when I got back into cycling, I searched high and low for lugged steel, and found a pink and purple Raleigh. To me, the combination of pink and purple is the word serendipity. It was my favorite word as a child, becuase those colors are so peaceful and serene. I remember looking up the word that kept popping up in my head everytime I went into my baby sister's room. When I read the definition, I fell in love with it, and serendipity became my favorite word.

After reflecting back on my life, and how often things happen to me by mere coincidence, I considered myself the one that travels in serendipity, or a serendipitour. That sounded too pretentious for a call name in a public forum, so I merged serendipity with my favorite star cluster, Ursa Major/Minor. The stars that are so easy to find in the night sky, the favor is returned because everyone can easily find their way by them in return.

Thus I became Serendipper.

I have long been a soccer fan, and in the 1994, the U.S., despite doing a little better than expected, took an early exit from the tournament. I found a World Cup chat forum and wanted to log on to participate and to give some support to the Mexican team, which was still in.

I've always liked Zorro - the mix of civility, compassion, dignity, humility, and thirst for justice were all character traits that I admire. Anyways, when I tried to register as Zorro, I found that it had already been taken. So being from the USA, I stuck that at the front, and had no trouble registering, letting people know where I was from, and revealing a little bit about my values, and I think it gave me a little bit of cred with the Mexican fans. I've been lucky and have the same screen name on all the major free sites. :)

I'm from Maine, have been skiing much longer than I've been biking. Add the downeast Maine accent to skier and voila: skiahh. If that doesn't work, think of it as ski-ahh, as in the great feeling you get when you're out making turns.

Because I haven't been skiing much the past few years, if I had to come up with a name today, it'd be bikeahh.

Serendipper...I love your explanation!

That's very cool. I used to think I had synesthesia -- some number suggest colours to me, as do musical notes when written out (less so when I hear them) -- but it seems that it's more of a subtle subconscious association than full-on synesthesia. What sort of connections seem to be the strongest for you? Words and colours?

As for my ID, it's fairly straightforward. As mentioned in another thread, one of my university flatmates and I often truncated words while speaking. He sometimes called me "gb" instead of my last name (Galbraith), since our other roommate shared the same first name. Across the street from our house was a Chinese-run convenience store that we jokingly called "cm", short for (ahem) Chinaman, as in "Hey! I'm going to CM to get some B!". Anyway, I bought a bike in China, and in a conversation with my friend, he suggested that what I had was in fact a CB. So it's not that politically correct, but you can't be politically correct ALL the time...

I needed a user name for MSN and everything I wanted was taken. Well Ed is my first name and P is my last initial. The number 333 was taken and 777 did not rhyme. Therefore I ended up with edp773. Everyone became used to me using it, so it became a standard username.

Other choices included bikED and biyclED. LOL.

Great explanation.

I am sure that serendipity was taken by the young lady who does triathalons with a prosthetic leg. She has moved over to cycling forums, but has earned my respect for a great can do attitude.
