Had the day off and what better way to use it then get a good ride in. I attempted this ride a few weeks ago but had to turn back due to high gust of winds coming from the east and blowing me to a near stop. Today's ride didn't have much wind but when it blew...burrrrrrrr. I left Harrah's at about 12:15 and got up to the South Grade fork about 1. I was feeling real good at this point as I started the long hual up the South grade. Great sights of the valley below going through the hairpins. I got to the top at about 2:45 with a few photo stops along the way. Traffic was good, there was only ONE bike on the mountain during the entire climb. I cruz a bit up the S7 to the first large dirt parking lot and sat and looked at the view. I started my Decent about 3:05 and DAMN that was FUN:eek: 12 minutes to get to the 76 fork!!! It was FREEZING DOWNHILL. My face was near numb, my lips were frozen, my finger ached when I hit the brakes, finger tips was numb and my toes....BURRRRRR I prolly hit speeds close to if not over 60mph on some of those straights and nearly draggin knee through the turns. I had only one car pass on the entire decent to the 76 fork so the road was ALL mine. And after that guy passed me, I was pacing his car for about a minute, then lost him in a hairpin to long straight. From the fork down to the valley was FAST. I was spinning my highest gear about 110rpm, so I know from the past, thats close to 47-48mph:D (my computer is lost on the coast somewhere) I pulled up to my car at 3:32. 27 mins from to top to my CAR.. CRAZY!!! LOVE IT:p And you know I gotta take pics;)

Great pics! I can't wait to do the Pie Ride...now I'm wondering how cold it will be in late November, so early in the morning! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/BrandyMama/emoticons/16_6_9.gifhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/BrandyMama/emoticons/16_6_9.gif

Well, I'm much better in the cold than the heat! And those pics are so gorgeous. I love this time of year as long as it doesn't rain! :D
P.S. I so wish I could do the Pie Ride this year...sigh...:(

I talked to a few guys at Harrah's that got back before I started and they said it was FREEZING up there. Got me all worried. They were walking like it too.

I'm not sure how this ride will be at 6am just before DEC, but we can always add layers if needed. But I wanted to make sure I can make it up this Mt before signing up on the Pie Ride. I'm looking forward to this climb again.

Great job! And nice pics.

In January, for the Pie ride and for my final tune-up the weekend before (Palomar repeats) I found the following clothing to be sufficient on the two cold mornings on Palomar: base layer, regular bibs, jersey, arm warmers, full-fingered gloves, windbreaker, knee warmers, leg warmers, shoe covers, head/ear band. I was a tiny bit chilly on an early morning descent, but otherwise, that clothing was plenty.

yah I think we will need layers for the pie run for sure. I normally don't wear my gloves, glad I did today. Though they still didn't help TOO much, my fingers were still numb.

Use rubber or latex gloves under your cycling gloves. I SWEAR by them. Yeah, they take some getting used to, and yes, you will be sweating in them. But wind can't penetrate the gloves and that horrible numbing doesn't occur.

M.E. that sounds like a great idea. I've never tried it, but I'll have to give it a try sometime.

hummm now thats interesting. I have a box of those in the garage for those oil changes. I'll have to give that a try, night riding season is upon us so that means ALOT of cold rides.

my 200lbs body helps me get up to speed a lil quicker:p My eyes were getting teary from the speed and the cold, which was a lil scary having one eye outa focus dipping into some of those hairpins. I don't think I'd do that again on a normal busy day on the Mt with all the motorcycles. I was lucky only one car passed me, but since the lane was open, I was able to hit the correct lines carrying alot more speed into and exiting the corners. I wish I had a helmet cam:D

you're gonna have to print that other thread and go shopping too! Its likely to be pretty darned chilly for the first few hours (then again, as soon as you start climbing, that may be a good thing! ;) )

are you talking about the really thin ones like the dr's wear? I've got some of those... maybe I'll throw them in the car for the PIE ride, in case anyone needs them...

I can't wear latex. I'll be completely drenched in sweat! But I use plastic baggies over socks just on my toes.

I'm hoping I can get this for myself for either xmas or b-day(march), would be great for next yrs racing, it would be even better if they did SuperD at Big Bear again.

I have one-- it's a lot of fun. A friend posted a bunch of track videos a while back, and I have some video going up GMR and down little GMR solo that I've never posted.

They suck batteries-- it's best to have a bunch of sets of rechargeables.

That was easy. I told my wife I'd pay her entry into a poker tournament and she said she'd give me a ride there anytime.

how much is the buy in? If this is your first time there, the warm up is going to be while climbing the gentle grades near the bottom where the wind is the strongest. You should be plenty warmed up by the time you hit the first banked lefty

$30 for the weekday noon tournament. http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/harrahs-rincon-san-diego/casino-gambling/poker-detail.html

I did the east grade in June. No wind then, just heat. The top wasn't bad but when I decended it felt like I was entering a furnace.

weekday is the best. Like Mo said, weekends are supercross there. I drove up there today with the GF and motorcycles were all over the place. Didn't see any roadies on the Mt but we didn't get up there til 3:30. A lil late for most roadies I guess.

I think it's easier and faster to decend down the front on my bike then in my car:eek:
