Most of what I do is commuting and recreational riding on the weekend. I have a Trek Pilot 5.0 CF and a MTB that I've converted to be my commuter. The MTB, I have discovered, is hard to ride on my 32 mile round trip ride. I want to doing some touring next year so with all this in mind I'm thinking of selling my Trek and buying a Bianchi Volpi. This bike looks to be a good fit for all these activities. Steel would be comfortable like the CF, it has the ability to easily add racks front and rear along with fenders. I can ride it on my long weekend rides and easily take it off on dirt roads when I want. Although the components aren't great, I can easily upgrade them later.

This all looks good, but just wanted to see what peoples opinion is about this. Would there be a better way? Don't want a large stable of bikes... That green is pretty freakin' ugly though....

The Volpe is a good bike - takes racks easily, has clearance for fenders etc. If I had my 'druthers, rather than using the STI shifting, they would have put bar-ends on it - your LBS might make the substitution for you.

Another thing to look at is the Bianchi San Jose, and then put an internally geared rear hub on it - the San Jose frame is very similar to the Volpe, except for the horizontal dropouts.

I commute on an older steel frame Bianchi touring bike (San Remo). Works well for my 30 mile RT commute.

knobster,

Isn't the Trek capable of using racks? I am looking at one because it will supposedly take wide tires and fenders, thus making it tourable.

Good luck.
