Advocacy & Safety - CRASH SURVEY! Describe your BIKE-CAR crash(es)!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Please describe the crash in detail, and include any other pertinent information:
1) Northbound on Flatbush Avenue near 7th Avenue in rightmost lane. Southbound motorist attempts left turn, cutting me off. Braked hard, turned left sharply, collided while our trajectories were nearly parallel. Spent a few rewarding minutes yelling at him & beating the side & hood of his car with bicycle. Adreneline subsided, felt vaguely ashamed as motorist drove away with look of shock and horror. Realigned bars and proceeded with rest of commute.

2) Northbound in leftmost lane on Lafayette street, just south of intersection where BL begins, in center lane position, motorist in slightly ahead of me (my front wheel was about where his rear bumper was) in center lane pulls half into left lane, flings open door as if pursued by bees. I steered left and braked, clipped his window frame with my right shoulder. Motorist's motives remain a mystery, as my enraged and repeated inquiries regarding his parentage, his family's traditions regarding maternal mating habits and his and his female companion's personal and aesthetic characteristics were met first by silence and then by apologies. Homeless man entered argument, in my support. Knowing little else would be accomplished, I proceeded northwards, leaving my advocate to continue the argument on my behalf.

Well, it might be reasonable if someone else posted it. But the fact that HH posted, and will be analyzing the results will muddy the responses.

I have never been in a bike-car crash either as the cyclist or the motorist. I've been in the bike lane, on the shoulder, in the right-most portion of the road, otherwise adequately destination-positioned, or on the bike path each time (as the cyclist of course).

Make sure you include my statistic in your "study".

I wasnt going to particepate in this survey because I have never personaly had a bike vs car crash.
But after reading the severity level 10, I got to wondering if maybe I had been killed in a bike car crash and just didnt realise it.

Is there some way I can check on this and find out?

Only 1 car bike crash.

Got into a verbal argument with an idiot in a car who was 2 feet from my rear wheel, laying on the horn for about half a block, even though there were two lanes to his left he could have used to get around me and it was a sunday morning with very little traffic.

As he passed me on the right, he tried to squeeze me into a van that had gotten in the lane to my left. I kicked his car, he slammed on the brakes, got in back of me. At this point I knew he was gong to run me down, so I accelerated as hard as I could and went left as fast as I could. I almost got away, but he hit me just as I made it to the left most lane of three lanes. Hospital, stitches.

Cops wouldn't charge him, state attorney said it was my fault for provoking him.

Description: I was riding home late at night on a Friday. I got to the far left like I had done everyother night to make a left hand turn to go to my apt. I totally didn't think that anyone would be drinking(I'm assuming the driver was drunk since he tried to stop, but kept going after the collision). Driver attempted to stop, I heard my wheel crunch, and then woke up on the side of the road. A girl(my age) stopped to see what happend, she was more hysterical than me. She asked if I was ok, I asked her if I was dreaming, then I asked if she hit me. I looked at my feet, wiggled them, said I was ok and stood up. Called my mom, had the girl call the police, then called my roomates. Police came, did a report, said the driver left 100ft skid marks(I probably left 20 ft :D ) which meant he was probably going 60mph(it's a highway so I'm not surprised). Roomates took me to the hospital, x-rays etc, nothing permanent, just road rash etc. Rear wheel was totaled, and rear triangle was bent enough that it was not repairable.

Are you interested in near misses, or only actual collisions? In the past 4 years that I've commuted regularly (plus around campus during college 20 years ago, and off and on before and after that), I've had one near miss and no actual collisions. I can tell you about the near miss if you'd like.

My bike was run over by a luggage car at the airport but I wasn't on it. Luggage car took sharp right turn followed by a sharp left turn. The bike slid off the middle trailer of 5 and was then run over by the last trailer. All while I watched in horror from the Gate. Damage = total.

Please describe the crash in detail, and include any other pertinent information:

Here is the intersection: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=South+Portland,+ME&ie=UTF8&z=19&ll=43.628752,-70.343839&spn=0.000879,0.002403&t=h&om=1 I was approaching from the south, the minor road with the median, positioned in the middle of the left-hand lane in order to turn left. (If you zoom out enough to see street names, it is Southborough Drive.) I can't remember if I had a green arrow or just a standard light.

Across the intersection was a parking lot with cars coming out, all (that I could see) turning left from their left-hand lane, which was also the straight-through lane. Since we were all turning left, our paths would not intersect and so we all proceeded into the intersection to make our turns. Suddenly, a white van pulled out from behind the line of left-turning cars opposing me and proceeded to speed straight through the intersection from the right-turn only lane, into my path. I made an emergency stop and went over the handlebars, landing on my right side. Fortunately, the van missed both me and my bike, and I immediately got up and walked the bike the rest of the way across, to a grassy area off-road. The van did not stop, although numerous other motorists did slow to see if I was okay, and one did stop to ask.

I have to think that had a collision happened, it would have been legally his fault for going straight through from the wrong lane and entering the intersection before it was clear. (Would his being in the wrong lane have cancelled out the right of way he would had had, had he been in the correct lane? I don't know.) However, my lessons learned included wearing a helmet (I wasn't at the time, since I was "only going out for lunch"), and being more vigilant for dangerous situations developing, including those that put me in danger through no fault of my own.

El Cajon Blvd east bound at Jessie Ave. I was moving pretty fast… at about 22MPH, in or very near the center of the right most lane, heading east. Motorist was stopped at a stop sign. I was on the major street and just crossing the minor street… as I rolled across the small residential street of the usual width (what 28 feet total?) The motorist left the stop to go north. I plowed into the left front fender of the sedan at full speed… not being able to react in the 14 feet or so distance I had to react. I went over the handlebars and was laid out on the vehicle. Police and ambulance responded and took me, unconscious, to Grossmont hospital. Police accompanied me and took details in the hospital after I regained consciousness. Police were very curious about my speed, and informed me that I “took out” the front left fender of the vehicle. Bike was totaled… forks, front wheel, handlebar, and front half of the frame were bent beyond repair. Made claim to Fireman’s Fund (ins co of motorist) and they were “astounded that anyone would ride a $900 bicycle… “ they wanted salvage rights. I was treated for facial injuries, held for observation, and later treated for back injuries and plastic surgery to repair facial laceration scaring. Treatment took about 6 months. (chiropractic)

Do we want to cover "near misses," "ahole aggressive drivers," objects thrown at cyclist?" At the time of all the above accidents, I did not own a car and cycling was my only means of transportation.

Based on his posting history, this actually ranks as one of his more reasonable threads.

That made me laugh. Best post I have read in months.

Interesting topic HH, though a little grizzly. Count me as zero car-related crashes -- my scars are my own fault -- mostly off-road.

From what I've read -- admittedly I sort of breezed through most of the details and read the descriptions -- sounds like the trouble starts when cars make turns. Makes me think that we'd be safer on the freeways!

Cheers to everyone who has recovered and gotten back on the horse.

"Safer" yet if riding the wrong way in the left lane on the freeways at midnight:rolleyes: ; no reports anywhere of a cyclist suffering even a scratch under such "safe" conditions.

Anywhere anyone wants.
I have no plans.
How it may be used mostly depends on what gets submitted.

ok, i'll take the bait...
isn't it rather unscientific to simply gather data and decide after the fact what you're going to use it for?
i guess that the point isn't integrity of data, simply info gathering?

10 for me you know the afterlife is awesome! no cars and never ending trails with 72 virgins along the way. sure it makes it tough to complete a ride but the hummus is really good!

72!! I was only offered 40 which I turned down, not being a pedophile

Might also be called trolling for more fodder for more bike lane hysterics.

It's like studying ice cores... we'll wait to see what the data tells us before we decide what it tells us.

Maybe, but in my case, no bike lanes were involved. They were pretty rare back then.

Never had a crash with a car, so I can't fill out the survey....

Since when is that a restraint on the anti-bike lane hysterics?

Riding without lights at night going downhill ran into a park car in the bike lane, bang, 21 stitches later and a totaled out bike.
