Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Because he'd surely not have this belief. (http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2006/oct06/oct07news)

I wonder if his opinion on Floyd would have been different if Axel hadn't ridden with Floyd. Saying Floyd did dope would taint Axel as well, guilt by association. However I do agree with him on the part cycling is most tested sport, hence more people are being caught.

It's not like Merckx can be a strict advocate for anti-doping in cycling when his own past is very questionable.

It seems to me he really steers clear of any open discussions on doping and only makes comments on the testing (how much or that they are trying to get cycling clean). I've never really read anything where he has condemmed another rider for his actions.

That's because they're all innocent! It's just those WADA Nazi's who make false positives so they can keep their jobs

why the **** would his opinion count anyway? has he assumed some god like status of all knowing...why would journalists think that his opinion count add anything to the issue.

our opinions dont count and neither does his. in fact his opinion counts for less than even ours as his view is tainted by his sons involvement.

I must have missed the part were they mentioned Merkx has a degree in Chemistry and Biology, you know - something other than speculation.

I think his opinion is valuable. True, it is pure speculation on his part and he admits that because he acknowledges that he wasn't there. One of the main elements of Merckx's character that comes across from reading about him and his racing history, is his steadfast determination (willpower) and devotion to fairness and honesty. Numerous accounts exist, from his racing peers, of Merckx's anger and frustration with his opponents who would cheat and lie to gain advantage. I think, assuming all this is true, it does give his opinion some worth because he is known for being of strong character. I respect his opinions because I believe they come from a solid moral foundation. Also, he's got way more racing experience than most and he personally knows Floyd and has a better grasp on his character than I do.

I saw him at Interbike last year and he looked great. Haven't heard or read anything about
health issues. What's up with him these days?

Out of curiosity, what did he say about Eddy's health?

I talked to a women who used to ride pro about 20 years ago and knew of people who took
steroids. She told me that the star rider on her team ended up with bone problems years later as a result. (something about osteoporosis...)

All I've ever heard about Merckx's health was that he was in pretty lousy shape because he gotten fat and way out of shape until the last year or two, decided to work on it and is now reportedly pretty fit.

He looked pretty fit at interbike last year. I also heard that he did a triathlon in israel or somwhere about a year ago and looked good there too.
