Touring - Surly LHT questions

1) Anyone runing tyres larger than a 2.1, like a 2.2 maybe?

2) As a reasonably in proportion 6 footer am I really gonna regret getting a 54cm frame. It's just I like 26" wheels you see.

Don't buy a LHT. Just go to Craigs list and hunt down a old school MTB with soild forks. I', guessing 19-21 inch frame. The longer the chainstays the better, look for one with a rear rack, a bike that's not beat to death. Get a set of panniers and hit the road.

Don't make this any tougher than it has to be.

If you're 6', you probably need at least a 56" LHT, or more likely a 58".

I guess what I want to know is whether it will be a huge mistake. My current steel mountain bike is 18" and I'm pretty ok with that.

I'm 6 ft. my LHT is 60 cm. I could ride a 62 cm. wouldn't even think of riding one less than 58 cm. treat your old mtb to some up grades and go riding.

To confuse you a little more, I'm 6' and mine is 56cm. Fits me perfect. My pants are 32" in length if that makes difference.

I'm a touch above 5'9" and I ride a 54cm LHT. My inseam is 31", but I wear 32's.

And to add to the confusion: I ride a 18.5" Hardtail MTB (big) for my offroad touring and trail riding. I wouldn't want to ride that frame on any trails too harsh, it's bigger size makes it a bit harder to step off of in uneven terrain. But when I'm riding, it's fine.

While it's a completely different price range you could consider the Rivendell, I think it's 26 in 56. Or Gordon.

Now if you want to try someting a lot more trick, You could get a Nashbar touring bike frame. It's way too high in the BB clearance so you could run 26 inches and still have average high BB clearance. It's a cheap frame and you woauld have to know how to add brakes, I think I know how I would do it, but it's something that would depend on your particular application.
