Triathlon - I will soon have Power

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
It looks as though I may be able to get a Powertap by this winter :D . I am going with the standard model, and getting it built onto my current Open Pro rim. Hopefully I'll be able to get it in about a month or monh and a half when I really start training for next year.

Wonderful news. My powertap is one of the best training investments I've made. Have you picked up a copy of Hunter Allan's and Andrew Coggan's book on power meters and power-based training?
No not yet. I'll look into them. I have a couple of guys I know who have been training with power, one of them for almost 6 years, and said they'd help me get started.
I'm hoping with some solid winter training and a dedication to using this thing effectively I'll get about 1 mph onto my biking, which I kind of ignored this year. Steep goal but that is part of improving.
Yeh good luck. I ride with a guy who has one. pretty nice ... and expensive!! tell us how it goes

Hunter Allen gave a full-day talk on this topic here in Seattle a few weeks ago and I was able to attend the first half. Someone asked his opinion of the various alternatives and as I expected, he had good things to say about Powertaps, SRMs, and the Ergomo unit. He didn't think the currently sold version of the Polar power system was worth the money (too variable, inaccurate, fragile), although a significant redesign of the Polar system is underway. One of the least expensive power units was the iBike ($400-500), and he thought this unit was quite good, with power measurements within 1-2% of the much more expensive units like the Powertap.

+1 on Training and Racing with Power by Allen and Coggan. Also you really want to get the Cycling Peaks software. It's a heck of a lot better than what comes with the Powertap.
