Classic & Vintage - 1986 Team Fuji

I still have a 1986 Team Fuji, which I've logged about 15,000 miles on. I paid $619.00 for the entire bike in 1986. It's a steel frame and to this day can go 50+ mph all day long. It's as rock solid as the day I bought it. It does have oxidation problems and I'm considering getting a new paint job for it. I rode my first century on this bike, so it has sentimental value as well.

Just kiddin ya... my 86 Schwinn Sierra comp's fully chromed frame is as shiny and rust free as the day i bought her.... But I admit, she won't do 50 MPH :)

Is yours all dura ace? I had one these from around that time and I agree, the bike could flat fly. Fastest I've been under my own power. I actually started checking ebay for. Loved that thing.

thanks for the pic--it's uncanny, the resemblance to mine. though mine has a silver stem (i forget what make) and a little less decal work (the little medalions w/"ribbons" above and below the "FUJI" on the seat tube are missing.) i wonder if they offered this for a couple years running with the similar but-slightly-different paintjob. also have a feeling the stem and headset were entirely replaced on mine, along with the rest of the comps, as i have all shimano 105 or 600 all round. if they kept making this bike in '87, is it possible they switched to shimano comps? and did these model shimano comps even exist in '87?

Here is an original, 86 Fuji Team in the alternate color that was available that year. It still has the original Suntour Sprint groupo, that was standard on the 86 Team, except for the shifters. I'm experimenting with a Suntour index shifter to replace the original friction shifter. The Sprint was a beautiful group, but it was friction shifting at a time when the change to index shifters was gathering momentum. My plan for this bike is to convert it to brifters. I've got a 7 speed Sora set up with a 7 speed Shimano freewheel. I intend to keep the original wheels.
Oh, it won't do 50MPH because the friction shifters keep slowing it down. :rolleyes:

I'm super excited as I just found out I'm getting an early '80s Team Fuji from my Dad. He found it at a garage sale for $25. The even cooler bit is that he worked summers as a bike mechanic at the local Fuji dealer in '84 so its not much of a stretch to imagine he could've built it way back when. I currently ride a Trek 7500fx & early '90s Stumpjumper - this bike will be a welcome addition, no doubt. Always wanted a classic (ish?) road bike, and, for me, this totally rocks!!! Not 100% sure what I'll do about the corrosion around the cable keepers on the top tube & down around the BB. Bummer. I don't want to do a repaint on a bike with such gorgeous stock paint (and decals), but I do want to preserve the bike & keep it riding strong. Only other issue is a dent in the top tube. . .

That's a great bike! Hold on to it. I'm guessing that it is a 1985. I picked up the same bike for more than your Dad with much worse paint. Fortunately, mine is all chrome under the paint. Here are three versions:

When you say it was all chrome under the paint, forgive me, but are you saying you had it chromed? I'm a bit cluless on the whole thing of chromed frames. I've seen it done & it looks gorgeous, but I assume it adds some weight - seems like it'd add a lot. Fill me in - that is a HOT bike! :D

It was chromed before it was painted. In the mid 1980's, there were a number of higher end road bikes that the manufacturers first chromed and then painted. This is one of them.

what exactly is your question? if the bike is a daily rider and has sentimental value repaint it however for most bikes repaining lessens any $$$ value the bike may have. a good professional paint job, especially one that can reproduce the decals is about $450 and up.

if you can ride or even average "50+ mph all day long" you should have turned pro years ago.

This thread is older than the Fuji.

It's the 1988 Team Fuji, the one I have bought looks in good condition and pretty original. You might have seen it on Ebay. It's in transit from the US to London, UK at the minute.

New life in this ZOMBIE thread! As it concentrates on Team Fuji, had to jump in. Recently purchased an 86 Team Fuji for $100, not in great shape, chrome is pretty pitted, but paint and decals good, and most of the SunTour Sprint grouppo is still on her. She ended up being too small for me, but my son rejected the idea I clean it up and flip it. HE nabbed it, and traded out for his 87 Mangusta (at 13, he is hooked on vintage road bikes!) We are working on cleaning and tweaking, swapped the bent (non original) wheels for a set of 105s, new chain and such. He is wondering if it is a valuable bike...I have pretty much told him it is a rider, so just RIDE! It may not be a collectable, but it does GO! Any other Team Fuji fanatics out there?

Zombie resurrection, but it's right up my alley. I recently picked up an '86 Team Fuji in the blue/yellow as well, and also for $100. The Sprint group on mine has been swapped over (all but the brakes) to tri-color 600 7s DT. When I saw it listed I was wishing for the Sprint group, but I bought it anyway.

The one I picked up still had the Sprint Brakes (missing hood rubbers), Crankset, Derailleurs, Pedals (missing one cap though...any sources?), shifters. The seat and wheels had been changed out. The chain was still SunTour, so possibly the original! The kid riding it, really beat it up, lots of scratches on Bk Levers, RD and such...he prefers BMX and was treating it as one!!!! The chrome is the worst, still working on trying to gently clean it, but it is in rough shape. FL salt air is BAD on exposed metals, and I would guess someone steelwooled it or something.
