General Cycling Discussion - Sheldon Brown's Health

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Prayers and/or good thoughts are a plus.

Well that truly sucks.
Here I was, basking in another Yankee post-season meltdown, and now I'm bummed.
Why do shytty things happen to the good guys?

Best wishes, Sheldon. I've learned so much from your site. So much. And I've barely scratched the surface. I figure when I can't ride a bike anymore, I'll ride a trike.

Is this a bad time to recommend electric bikes, or electric trikes?
Sending positive energies towards Mr. Brown right now.

It sounds like he has CMT. I hope not though.

I can relate to Sheldon's leg problems as we share similar concerns.
Both concerns take function from our legs and , pretty much, end
our BIcycling days. All that is left for us is TRIcycles which is OK
in my case.
I can also tell you that there is a level of personal sorrow in loosing the
full use of one's legs (or any other body part for that matter). One learns
quickly to adpt and move one. Like Sheldon I too have to use a Rollator
when I walk alot in place of my ever present cane. But that's Ok 'cause
I can still get around and have not been forced into a wheelchair......yet.
The important thing for folk's like Sheldon and me (along with many others)
IS TO NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT TO KEEP ON CYCLING.

All I really want out of life is to be like Sheldon when I'm older, and I'm certain I'm not alone in this sentiment. Our best wishes are with you, Capt. Bike.

Thanks Sheldon for the help and advice you've given here, and a few times by direct emails. If there's anything your admiring public can do beyond prayers and thoughts, let us know.

So sad to hear about such serious health problems. A great thank you from Norway for the wonderful work you have done ( and still does), for all of us cycling nuts. God bless.

Sooner or latter all biking days come to an end, although thankfully he seems to be fine on a recumbent. It might be worth noting that Lyme disease prevention should be taken seriously.
"He says people with NPH can't raise their toes as I can, thinks it could still be MS or Lyme Disease or maybe some other infection in the spinal column."
I would like to thank Sheldon Brown for sharing this.

Mr. Brown, your writing a journal about your illness shows your strength. May your doctors perform their work with skill and may you persevere in the recovery.

Well Hell! The man ain't dead yet... I hope Mrs. Brown's idiot son, Sheldon, has MANY years of cycling left. Being not too many years in Sheldon's slipstream, myself, I realize that I may be in Sheldon's shoes (figuratively speaking) sooner than I think. The difference between me and the OCP crowd is that, like Sheldon, I realize I'm not immortal; the youngsters have yet to learn that. I hope that I can take my eventual limitations with as much grace and style as Sheldon. I'll also keep the boy in my prayers. It can't hurt...
Best thoughts going out to Sheldon. I read the news a few days ago myself. I'm currently watching both of my parents go through hip replacement surgery so I know first hand how the loss of the ability of walking can effect someone. Sheldon, if you read this, keep your head up and those wheels rolling any way you can. You've helped so many here, and hope that our encouragement can help you just a little in return.
Best wishes, Sheldon, this sounds trite, but you are in my prayers.
Good luck and best wishes, Capt. Bike!!!
Best wishes from here also.
If not for Sheldon's website, my Dad's 1979 Raleigh probably wouldn't be back on the road. It meant alot to restore something that belonged to him and be able to show it off.
Thanks.

Sheldon, best wishes.
I second that!
I'll second that as well.
Indeed, think about how much tougher it would have been had the Dude not been riding for all these years.
Best wishes on a speedy recovery, bicycle genius and mentor to many an aspiring bike nerd out there, myself included.
Sheldon- I also have and continue to learn from your postings, here and elsewhere. Best to you and hopes for great improvement.

This sounds in many ways very similar to something I am dealing with. I have idiopathic intracranial hypertension where the CSF is at a high pressure in my brain. Getting spinal taps greatly improves my condition. Although this disease manifests itself in my brain and eyes, the treatment is with Diamox. Diamox reduces the production of CSF.
Something to think about.....I see a neurological ophthalmologist.

I was using his internal gear calculator just the other day. That website is a gold mine of information, most of which cannot be found in publication. It goes to show you that everyone should take every day like it was their last.

Friend told me Sheldon was having trouble riding, but I didn't realize he was so severely debilitated. Gads, what a bummer. I certainly hope he can be restored to full function and get back to enjoying the joys of riding in the near future!

Best wishes Sheldon. In times of frustration just remember that a good portion of the bike community benefits from the knowledge you have so ably shared. So although you personally may be facing difficulty, you have made it possible for many to overcome theirs (Granted it is easier to fix a bike than a human body but if you don't know how to fix a bike you are pretty much stuck anyway until discovering Sheldon's mass internet tome of cycling knowledge). Well, don't know if I am saying this the best way, but know we are gratefull for all you have done so far and wish you the best in the future.
NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT
Words to LIVE by.
Keep spinning, Sheldon. Best of luck and all my wishes for smooth shifts and tailwinds.

Sheldon best wishes. Like everyone else who owns an old bike (steel is real) I've used your site.
Any updates that last post is almost one month old.
Get a referral to Dr. House! :)
Seriously though: Hate to see that. Hope Sheldon gets well. I've used his site so many times, I lost count.

I hope that Sheldon regains the physical ability to enjoy cycling again, just as he has helped me to regain the joy of the sport after a long lay off.

I learned the correct way to brake from Sheldon's Site. It saved my butt in a close encounter with a deer a couple of weeks ago. The Cycling world is truly blessed by his presence.
Get Well Soon!
:( Sheldon, I have little but my thoughts to offer for all that you have freely given to the biking community.
Thank you for your efforts, and as Tightwad stated, NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT.
