Apparently this treatment was discovered during the US Civil War. Nurses discovered that soldiers who had been laying around a while picked up maggots in their wounds had the dead flesh eaten away cleanly, leaving living tissue alone. Ever see leeches used to clear out a bad bruise?

I had maggot therapy when I had nonhealing wounds on my legs to clean up the necrotic tissue. It felt weird, believe me, with the maggots crawling around inside the bandage, but it probably saved my leg!http://freeweb.supereva.com/esorciccio2002/smilies/yuk.gif

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth...but if I were going to lose the leg, I'd do it in a heartbeat, too.

Thanks for the photos, that's awesome! I was hoping to see some footage of maggots in action though... A time-lapse sequence like they have on the Discovery channel where the maggots are in fast-forward moving over the mouse as it slowly disappears... :)

Why you say that? I think it's a perfectly valid procedure and has been presented in numerous sources (warning, photos):
