Am I a Troll?

Please explain to me what a troll is, just in case I don’t know what a troll is.

How does one lose the title of "TROLL”?

Very often people mistake as trolls individuals who haven't yet discovered Google.

Ok now!

I asked because it seems this board uses the term a little different than I am use to.

An internet "troll" is usually someone who delights in creating
drama, or illiciting controversy in internet forums.

A topic more suited for the General discussion area here.

I thought about posting this in the General discussion area, but I was more interested in the opinion of the folks that live here.

And of course it is more controversial if I post it here.

When you say creating drama and eliciting controversy, do you mean like correcting some one spelling constantly, or constantly telling people to use google:)

Or do you mean like I just did with the above question?:o

I guess I need to find a support group. Is there a Trolls Anonymous, or something that I can join?

Nah... Trolls are witty and smart, and are able to incite violence between others while standing safely off to one side to enjoy the show.

A select number of posters we get here just want attention. They yell at everyone, everyone yells back and throws rotten produce at them. I guess any kind of attention at all is good enough for some folks. They take all the sport out of trolling. What's the fun in starting an argument when some lonely drunk won't shut up?

I dont think I am an intentional Troll.
I didnt set out to be a troll.
I think I have been driven to trolldom by boredom.

I came to A&S to learn about saftey, and the best way to ride my bike,
and I am just getting bored while waiting on HH, and his oponents to decide whether I should weave, take the lane or hide in the ditch.

damn, I did it again didnt I?

OK..I get your point...But
I think he explained rather well in the 50,000 word DLLP thread about hyper-flex positioning
in relation to the variable conditions with consideration of subjective, and objective risk that
it encompasses.
If his words were baby shoes they should literally be bronzed.

Naw. Nobody who starts a thread with "Am I a troll?" could possibly be a troll.

I haven't noticed many trolls on A&S, if any. The most common trolling behavior on A&S seems to be calling somebody else a troll (a common troll tactic). I've been involved in some forums and usenet newsgroups that make this place look like a frickin' lovefest and I've been a moderator on another forum since time began where we get many times the number of trolls as A&S seems to get. Trolls are usually fairly easy to deal with.

Contrary to popular belief, trolls are rarely the biggest problem on a message board. Humorless, arrogant, insulting, condescending and sanctimonious know-it-all one-issue ideologues often cause considerably more disruption. And they can be considerably more difficult to deal with. A&S and, for that matter, cycling advocacy in general, seems to have more than its share of those.

The term "troll" is commonly misused to refer to those who post inadvertant flame bait. And then there is what I call, for want of a better term, the "reverse troll", the person who unintentionally posts troll bait. Reverse trolling always crack me up. There aren't really any trolls in A&S so there's no reverse trolling, either.

That is the way I have always seen it.

I am pretty sure I have way to good a sense of humour to be a troll.

Now this fits me a little better "sanctimonious know-it-all one-issue ideologues"

Except I have way to many issues.

Maybe I am just a Lazy Troll.

I've always thought that guy who writes post after post about his stupid Rebike in the recumbent forum is a troll, as is the guy who argues with him who has a gorilla for an avatar. I stay out of that forum just because of those two ijits.

I hang out here because we have a higher class of troll in A&S.

I guess I need to find a support group.
Trolls, IMO, are looking for a support group to confirm their self proclaimed wise or "expert" opinions; or think and post as if they are spokesmen for a support group.

Dead giveaway of the bike discussion troll: using the term "We" and Us" when giving their own opinion on this board. Another tool of the troll is starting polls and then arguing/debating with all those who provide an "improper/unwanted" response; and showering praise on those who provide the pollster's prefered response.

I think that term "sock puppet" is pretty funny. I hadn't heard that until I read the Wikipedia listing. It would appear that there are a few sock puppets online as well, and that our lead troll may be trying to manipulate us with them as well.

Yes, you did. That was a pretty dumb statement. Let's keep things simple:

1. You're a troll (by your own admission)
2. Where do trolls belong? In the ditch of course.

Glad I could help. Next?

I wonder if Troll is a bit of a misnomer on the net.

Real Trolls tend to hide under bridges and wait for their victims to come to them.

Gremlins on the other hand, like to be all over the place getting in everybody’s business.

I think I might be a sanctimonious know-it-all many-issue Gremlin.

Or more accuratly a sanctimonious know-it-all Gremlin with issues.

Real Trolls tend to hide under bridges and wait for their victims to come to them.

I think the usage of the term "troll" on the internet is a hybrid derived from two parental usages: "trolls" being evil creatures who wreak havoc, and "trolling" (or fishing), as in this case, fishing for trouble - see also "baiting".
