Why do you get carbon fiber frames that are painted over? For me, the actual raw carbon look is what would make the bike *special*. Please explain to me...

Their are frames with full carbon weave look - it is just the way the manufacture of frames "decorate" them. For me the alure of CF is actually the shapes - ohhhh curvy!

the top layer of carbon is the woven one and is there mostly for decoration and/or impact protection. most of the layers underneath are unidirectional fibers that are much less pretty. it might be lighter,easier and/or cheaper to make a painted frame than a 'nude' one. also many frames that have a woven or braided finish use paint in areas like the bottom bracket (at the cranks) to hide where it joins to aluminum.
