Fifty Plus (50+) - A new "oldie" from UK

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi
My name is George from England (jibi=GB), and this is my first post in this forum.
At 57 I am not the oldest here, by a long way :)
I enjoy long distance touring and expedition
Last year I went to Patagonia in South America for 5 months touring, and then had 3 months cycling from Gibralta back to the UK. and to finsh off the trip from the end of the World I went up to John O'Groats for a quick 6 day trip
I have just had an operation to repair my right knee, and am "stir crazy" waiting to go on the next trip from Bejing, China to Paris, France.
enjoying reading about all the rides while I recuperate, a vicarious pleasure.

Welcome, jibi. May your knee be in full recovery soon!
What bicycle(s) do you ride?
So was the knee originally injured by too much bicycling? I've had several friends have ACL surgery who had to stop running but were advised to bike as much as they wanted. I switched to a bicycle because of back problems. I am lately having some knee issues, but can't tell whether it is caused/aggravated by bicycling.
May you have a long, healthy life and continue your AMAZING bike riding adventures.
George: Wow! You've taken some incredible trips. I can see why it must be difficult to work your way through recovery. Hope you're able to get back on your bike soon.

Are any of your rides posted on crazyguyonabike.com (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com)
Thanks for the warm welcome.
My knee injury was just cartilage ( keyhole) but also found some arthritis in there so gave me a free scrape.
Tomorrow ( Tueday) I have to see the doc again so I should get the all clear to start, quietly, riding again.
so far I have been doing physio to keep the quads and mobility, all seems Ok. But getting on the bike again is all I think about.
But I will have to take it easy, no centuries for a while LOL

I have a website and an on-road blog so do not use crazyguyonabike. I started but it was too much in internet cafes to keep all up to date.
Cheers

My touring bike is a Thorn Raven Catalyst with Rohloff gears and I use a B.O.B. Ibex trailer

Great to find a different type of Rider on the forum, and another UK based. I know Thorn make some great bikes but That Rohloff is not something I would have contemplated for Distance riding a long way from civilisation. Not many mechanics in The middle of no-where and even less to know about repairing them. BUT I know they have a good reputation for reliability.
On the knee problem- Haven't had cartilage problems but have suffered with knees- The quad muscles are vital to keep the knees in shape but as I found out- do not forget the rest of the body- After a 6 month lay off- I found a local gym and although I was in recovery training- I did manage to build up the rest of the body that had wasted in the period I was off.
Good luck on the recovery
Welcome George! It sounds like you certainly have had some really special trips. Here's hoping you're back in the saddle in no time.

Hi George, I was off the bike for 3 mnths due to a crash & i sustained a broken hip, I found aqua-therapy great for getting every thing moving, especialy walking in the pool, both forward & sideways ,it allso gets you walking without limping witch seems to make your back & shoulders suffer !

Welcome to the forum. Now, post your picture and your bike(s) in the Rogue's Gallery. Actually, we don't care all that much about your picture, just be sure there is a picture of your bike.
Welcome to our addiction! You and stapfam can keep us posted from the other side of the pond.

Welcome.
I can't shut up with this quad discussion. For the sake of balance (perhaps literally too) if you work the quads get the hams too!!
Again, welcome.
