Just thought I'd give a heads up about a great trail for the MTBers out there.

It is in eastern Long Island in a small town called Rocky Point. Permit is yours for the cost of an envelope and a few stamps. (PDF is available at: http://www.bikekinetix.com/pdf/dec_rp_permit.pdf) Get the permit. It gets you parking, a map and there are rangers who ride around and check. Also, it lets the state know people are using it and that helps gaurantee access.

Here is a map of the trail:26779

It isn't very hilly but it is secluded and fun.

From the city you could take LIRR to Port Jefferson and ride the seven miles to the trail. (Just head east on 25-A.)

(I've mentioned a few times on BF that there is a good LBS in Rocky Point. It is just off the trail on Old/Business 25-A. (East of Rocky Point Cycles (a Harley shop) by a few hundred feet.))

There is also Cathedral Pines. I am not sure, but one or both of these trails close up sometime soon for hunting season. At least they use to.

Rocky Point is closed for the Winter for hunting. Cathedral Pines might be as well.

At least they use to.unless things have changed bow hunting is from now through New Years. (I used to put a copper little cow bell on my seat rail and ride during bow season. It just isn't an issue -- because of how bow hunters hunt (vs gun hunters.))

Then New Years Day starts shotgun season. Stay away.

Trails are closed this period and shouldn't be ridden anyway.

I can get through the Rocky Point loop on a rigid singlespeed, taking all the additional black diamonds, in 1 hour, 15 minutes and some seconds, averaging 12.4 mph. Since I usually do it alone, I'm not sure how that compares....I'm just curious is anyone doing it faster than that?

I remember riding there just after the horrible brush fires in the nineties. The South part of the trails was like the scene froma bad sci fi movie. It was real creepy.
