Commuting - What MediaCreations Sees on His Commute

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wouldn't you know it - I choose to take pics of my commute on the only overcast day we've had for weeks.
About a kilometre into my 13.5 km journey.
I guess the tales of Aussies being upside down are false. You're SIDEWAYS :D

Another shot of bitumen.
I see you turned the picture for the rest of us LOL :D

And looking back from the same place.

Here's the start of the cycleway that opened a few months ago. It runs next to the railway line.

If you don't want to ride all the way you can lock your bike in one of these lockers and then take the train. These lockers are at most train stations around Perth.

On the left is the road I used to ride on. On the right is the train track.

The intersection on the right used to be a real pain. The cycleway was built as a bridge over the top so I don't have to stop at lights any more.

Who needs to cross busy roads when they build cycleway tunnels right underneath them?

This view of the city is on my right as I head to work in East Perth.

I pass the new East Perth redevelopment on my way into work.

And then head uphill to work.

The sky was much brighter when I headed for home. This is the Hyatt Hotel opposite work.

Here's more of the East Perth redevelopment with the city in the background.

It's certainly not the most picturesque journey but it gets me to work and back.
I'll have to do a few trips around Perth and show you the beautiful side. I'll get some pics from the Swan River that runs alongside the city and of Kings Park that overlooks the city.
And Raiyn - you must have got to see my first photo for the 30 seconds it was up before I realised I'd posted it sideways. I always said you were quick.:D

Nice! Its a good ride. Its not too much different than mine if I were to go the direct route. But you do have that nice path. So you guys drive on the left and ride bikes on the path on the right??

Nice pics of a nice commute.

It looks much nicer than most of the commutes around Atlanta.
It looks like Australia is a lot more bicycle-friendly than most places in the US.
I have never seen bike lockers, "uncongested" bikeways, and light traffic like you have.

Thanks for the pics! Is there a charge for using the bike lockers?

How did you go about getting those bike lockers, did your local council install them? I was just thinking of my new commute that I'll start next week (probably). Seems a few others probably ride to work in Southport, too. Maybe we could use a few of these.

The lockers are free to use and are provided by the state government.
Here's a few more details (http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/metro/gettingthere/cycling/parking.html) on the lockers and other bike parking facilities around Perth.
We had a similar program like that in Chicago at some of the north side train stations, however they had to put an end to it, as a lot of the homeless people began using the lockers as a place to store their stuff, so it ended pretty quickly. :(

I took a slight detour on my commute today. By going around 300 metres further I get scenery like this.

Great pics! I live in the "Land of 10,000 lakes" so I have simular views, we also have a nice network of paved trails, bike lanes and nice back roads. We have bike lockers also but they charge by the month. They are found variious spots in downtown Minneapolis and at many of the Park and Rides (bus stops) in the suburbs. Thanks for sharing.

Gee Rodney, I'd be taking that detour every day.

I don't know about every day, but I'll certainly be taking it a lot more often.
Funny how we can often forget that making small changes can change the colour of our day.
