Commuting - Bike lights (172.4 w) vs car lights 110 and 220 w.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

172.4 watts, plus four LED lights on the bike.
Car is 55x2 on low = 110w
and 55x4 on high =220w

LOL I was thinking the bike's right drop bar was resting on the dog's head... I knew it... steve's finally snapped, somehow I think it was all my fault.. particularly about my "you should do it" comment.
In fact, I know he's snapped cause he has a salt shaker on his handle bar.
One question. Do you have problems with UFO's following you at night?

Hell, what with all the lights blending together into a single huge light source, I'd think a train was coming straight at me!

To get the wattage of your bike did you just add the wattage of all the lights together or was there some special thing? I'm really uninformed when it comes to power... sorry

How many watts of light and how many watts of heat? What running time on those lights?

Throw a couple mirrors on there and you'd look like something out of Quadrophenia:

As they put the straight jacket on my arms, I'll be saying...."It's all slvoids fault".

Wow. So how much for the entire rig?
It's a little more than that, but I just added up the ones that I knew the rating for.
The cost? 12 years of trying to find the right light.
How many watts of light and how many watts of heat? What running time on those lights?
The watts is the total battery drain used by the systems, some goes into light ,some goes into heat. All I know is that I can brew coffee on the 50w halogen light.
Running time? One light will go eight hours. One at a time added together they will go 6 years before recharging.:D
One question. Do you have problems with UFO's following you at night?
I don't really think of it as a "problem". I kind of like it. :D

My questions are: How many pounds of batteries do you haul to power that up? Do you have a trailer to drag them around in?

So, do you pull a generator behind your bike?

seriously, what sort of reaction are you getting on the street?

I'm pretty sure this was intended just as a demonstration. As soon as he's discharged from the psych ward, we can find out for sure :)
Is that an air raid siren on the far left (right as you look from the front) or as previously speculated, a salt shaker? I mean what's the point in being seen if you can't be heard, right?

mech is correct, I just rode around one night with that to see what it was like. It was fun.
I scared a kid on the bike path into running away into the woods. I totally stopped traffic at some intersections. It just about doubled the weight of that 22 lb bike.
The "salt shaker" is a 58 led x 6 aaa battery light. It is brighter than the 2.4 watt Cateye micro halogen. Has a much more even beam and the spread goes right out to 90 degrees on each side. The bike bracket is not great, but the light is so good it's worth working on the bracket to me. It is a GREAT back up light, the beam is better than any self contained LED on the market that I know of. It's from ebay. Beam photos available on request.:) mech. I think the whole thing was around $50.
They keep saying I have to stop wearing my costume before they let me out. I say it's not a costume it's my clothes, you idiots.
What is up with them? :(

I was just looking at the like 28 LED lights and stuff and noticed you are using one on this rig!
How is it? Do you recommend I make at 28LED light my main light for commuting near dusk? I was considering that...

I have the 28 led one, but this is 58 or something in the 50's LED's. This is much better, even brigher than the 100 some LED model the seller says. It has a great beam, The bracket is not too hot. But you can make it work. Don't get the 28 model for riding. This light is just about good enough if you go slow. But it's better than the other handle bar self contained LED lights. I use it for a back up. I would say something brighter is better. Near dusk you need more light than midnight sometimes to see the ground. I got this from an ebay seller.

ok, so the second thing I noticed was that there are no brakes on that bike. And platform pedals. Wow. How do you stop with all those batteries? I'm assuming it's fixed, but you must have freakish quads or be completely cracked.

Ha! My trick worked. I fooled you into thinking it's a fixie.. Nope. Rear coaster brake. :)

You're like rolling daylight!
I bow to your luminance.
That's insane! I needed a bit more light this morning... I went off-path due to leaf scatter obscuring the path surface. Going from a nice smooth MUP, off a little 2" side, into wet leaves mixed with rocks and debris... That was fun.
I think I'll get a setup like yours :D
Really, that reminds me of the sillyness that is my friend's Land Rover light setup. When he cranks them all up I can feel the heat of the lights as I stand in front. It's insane!

From the pics it looks like your 172W isn't pumping out nearly as much (or at least not as useful) light as the 110W low-beams.
If I had to guess, I'd say more of your power is going to heat than in the car system because of a lot of redundant wiring.
Now if someone would make 2 easily mountable 55W LED systems with good optics...we could really light up the night.

I think the light is just more intense at the middle, while the low beams are more spread out. With the right optics (or by pointing the various lights in different directions), I'm sure the bike lights would be equal or better than the car lights.

True.
The reach in the center is a little more with the bike lights also. It's easier to see in a different location.

This counts as 33% of your final grade so you better save this !! :p
Maybe another day I'll try and list all my lights. Too tired today to go looking.
Lupine Edison 10 16w HID = to 65w halogen. yeah, I compared it very carefully to 50 and 55 w halogens.
Nightrider Blowtorch 10 w HID equal to about 38-40 w halogen, yeah tested too.
Nightrider Digital pro 6 15w halogen. Not made any more.
50w mr 16 bulb homemade with sla battery. Can boil water on light (really). Smaller and nicer than all the plastic pipe lights.
Cateye micro halogen 2.4 watt halogen x 4AA batteries.
-------------- That's 172.4 watts equivalent of halogen--------------
Don't know the watts of the LED lights.
54 LED X 6 aaa Battery light from ebay.
Serfas 3 LED x 2 AA light
Cateye 400 3 LED x 3 aaa light
Older Nashbar brilliant/Performance Flare white/BLT/S-sun 3 LED x 3 aaa light

I was hoping you would identify them on that frontal picture from Clockwise :D The 53 LED I know and the Lupine I know, the rest are a blur....
Also I was hoping we would get a rating of each, on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the Lupine, or a single sentence comprised of "OK to "don't bother"
I love the size of the Lupine Light Head. It's Diameter is Just right :)

HOly crap. How long does it take you to take everything off and mount it again? It would be the royal suck if you're out for grocery shopping at night. Still... man, if you're in town let me know. I'd buy the beer just to see that in action. *wow*
