Does anyone know where I can live in january? I come back to philly january 5th and the place I was going to stay at just ****ed me over. I need to be somewhat close to Drexel's campus, like within a 20 or 30 minute ride.

Ask your friends!

PLEASE!

Alright, suckas: I just bought a ticket on a big jet plane to Philly (yo!) for January 10 - 15. I'll be in NYC most of those days for a very important conference, but I WILL make a point to spend at least one night in Philly. I need some advice on where to drink. I also need a bike to borrow, should anyone feel so inclined. At the very least, I can offer you the amusement of watching a Florida boy freeze his nuts off. Maybe I'll buy you a drink. I like to drink drinks.

Thanks, Philly. With your help, we can erase this whole Union/Confederate miscommunication.

i'll be at the black sheep tuesday night until 2 something am... i know far too much about that super busy thing max speaks of...

but if ya'll cycle folks are so inclined feel free to stop in for some brew in your travels... the big red door on the corner of 17th and latimer...

as for the robbstory... thats a lovely spot for the drinking of drinks... most of my favorite spots lie in the higher priced center city area and the more dive-ish fishtown area... however i would recomend avoiding the uber priced olde city region... dumb trendy people huge crowds and 8 dollar drafts makes life feel not so fresh...

i may have a bi-cycle available as well... will you be needing it to travel to ny as well? or just for the time spent in philly?

best advice you can get... coming into philly... drink the local brew... it can be quite lovely (all things yards being personal favorites... but theres so much more)

wait. that dude that was there is doing a COVER story?! haha, is the pretzel ride really cover story material? how much can you possibly write about it? there was already an article in the metro about it a month ago or something. This is going to be goofy. Also, i agree that i can not decide if this is a good or bad thing for the pretzel ride.

hey folks -- I'm home for the holidays, and probably doing a few longish rides in this scary-nice global warming/el-nino mishmash. what else is happening bike-wise?

also, y'all may have seen my thread about philly <--> NYC. I'm thinking of riding from here to NY for the alleykitten, though I may go back a day or two beforehand. anybody potentially interested in riding it?

shark!

wait, if you are the guy who I think you are, then you beat me by one place in the last philly race. you could do the aleykitten just fine. riding your bicycle to nyc before the alleykitten is another question entirely. I'll be doing it if I can find someone to carry my bag full of xmas goodies home for me on the chinatown bus, as I have no rack.

Midnight Run

A merry band of bicyclists makes a weekly pretzel trek.

by G.W. Miller III

Compared to what it’s been over the past few months, the Twisted Tuesday Pretzel Ride crowd is small. Just 30 bikers are waiting at the base of the Art Museum steps.

There are a few dirty mountain bikes, a handful of older models, a couple of shiny new-looking road bikes and a bunch of well-worn workhorses. One guy rolls in on a low-riding recumbent bicycle.

Everyone is milling about, chatting in little groups, blissfully unaware that the launch time—11:45 p.m.—has passed.

Peter Dalkner steps up as the default leader for the evening and bellows, “Let’s go!”

And the riders hop on their bicycles, pedal around Eakins Oval, then cruise down the Ben Franklin Parkway. The leisurely paced pack occupies one full car lane, with bikers stretched out for several hundred yards.

They roll toward LOVE Park, make a right on 15th Street, then circle around City Hall. They blow through a red light, head south on Broad and blow through a few more lights.

Some drivers honk their car horns. Others wave as they pass. A few cars slam on their brakes when they see the riders rolling in front of them.

At Washington Avenue the bikers weave through traffic, bring a tourist bus to a halt, then race toward the Center City Soft Pretzel Co., near Ninth and Washington, to get their warm, delicious treat.

“It’s a really cool social thing,” says Dalkner, 29. “But the number of people is kind of getting out of hand. My roommate swore it off when so many people he didn’t know started showing up.”

Laura Csira, a 24-year-old Temple University student from Doylestown, started the Pretzel Ride two years ago this month after a similar evening event, Thrashing Thursdays, was initiated.

The Thursday ride meets at LOVE Park for a 5-mile loop followed by an intense, high-speed 20-mile sprint around the city.

That ride is cool and all, Csira says, but there’s no reward at the end. “We always talked about making a pretzel run, but it was always too early.”

The pretzel factory doesn’t open until midnight.

She chose Tuesday for the slower-paced, social-oriented Pretzel Ride that puts the bikers in front of the pretzel shop right when the first steaming pretzels are coming out of the oven.

It started out small—eight or 10 people gathering at the Art Museum at 11:30 p.m. At 11:45 they make the gentle ride through the heart of the city. Occasionally they’ve pedaled in the rain or sloshed through the snow. On some frigid nights there were only two courageous riders.

“It was like a Tough Man competition,” says Dalkner, one of the original riders. “It was a contest to see who was the most dedicated, the most diehard.”

As the weather improved and the word slowly spread, the crowds began to grow. Friends of friends arrived, and then random people who happened to stumble across the large group started tagging along. By summer the weekly event had become a major attraction, with more than 60 bikers on some nights.

“At first the pretzel guys were weirded out by us,” Csira says. “There’s a crapload of kids buying pretzels?”

People started bringing their own condiments and pretzel accessories—chocolate, Cheez Whiz, caramel, ice cream, Nutella, drinks from the nearby 7-Eleven. One night the riders poured their condiments into a giant pile in the middle of Washington Avenue and took turns skidding through the gooey mess.

“Peter had Cheez Whiz on his bike for a couple of months,” Csira says.

Someone even started a MySpace site for the Pretzel Ride. The Ride now has 80 friends.

“My baby has blown up,” Csira says with pride. “All these people are meeting new people, and that was the point. And they get to eat warm, tasty pretzels.”

She’s a little disappointed to see some of the newer riders have a complete disregard for the rules of the road—running through red lights, blocking traffic and occupying all the lanes heading in one direction so cars can’t get by.

“Everyone thinks it’s cool to take over all of Broad Street and Washington Avenue,” Csira says. “When I was younger, I thought it was kind of cool too, sticking it to society and all. But I don’t want the drivers taking out their anger on the next bikers they see.”

When Csira rode the Pretzel Ride on her birthday in August, she knew only a handful of the 40-plus riders. She hasn’t been back since.

There are bicycles everywhere in front of the pretzel shop on Washington Avenue. Young people are chomping on the doughy treats (25 cents each) while resting on stoops, leaning against railings and sitting on the ground.

Adam Jordan, a first-timer who’s never tasted a fresh soft pretzel, says, “It beats a Wawa one that’s been sitting in a bag all day.”

More people show up—young partiers, random locals, deliverymen picking up orders. Everyone mingles with the bikers.

“We think it’s great,” says John McCardell, a pretzel shop worker who bags pretzels as they slide off the oven rack. “They’re never no trouble at all.”

Csira blames her busy school schedule for her four-month absence. She still likes the late-night ride with the scrumptious reward at the end. The giant crowd kind of annoys her, so another night might be happening soon.

“I’m kicking around the idea with a few of the original riders,” Csira says.

But she’s not saying which night.

****, I forgot to post the real reason I came to this thread (if this thread isn't dead yet)

Are you all interested in a philly board? It would be a good way to get more people to join rides, highlight events to more people, and we could build a calendar into it. I'm moving up February 2/3, anybody willing to work on this with me?
