NEW YORK - A small aircraft crashed into a high-rise on the Upper East Side, setting off a fire and startling New Yorkers, police said. There were conflicting reports on whether the aircraft was a small plane or a helicopter.

Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said an aircraft struck struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen. Flames were seen shooting out of the windows. Video from the scene showed at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.
"There's huge pieces of debris falling," said one witness who refused to give her full name. "There's so much falling now, I've got to get away."
Whether anyone was injured was not known, and it was unclear if the crash was an act of terrorism.
The address of the building is 524 E. 72nd Street — a 50-story condominium tower built in 1986 and located nearby Sotheby's Auction House. It has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than $1 million.
Federal Aviation Administration officials say it's too early to say what type of aircraft was involved.

One of my co-workers just IM'd me. He's at a client right in that area, said it looked like a tiny plane that was damaged before it hit, i.e. not intentional.

it looks to me to be a genuine accident. bad enough, but at least better than another attack.

no kidding. it's amazing how fast this news spreads. i got a breaking news alert from MSNBC in my email and by the time i got up from my desk most of my office had heard about it, there were videos\pitcures all on the internet, and people were calling their friends and family.
it is a small commutor plane, I am listening to 1010wins news. So far no mention of plane problems. I am headed out of here to for my "lovely" commute home to LI. <grins>

I thought airspace around manhatten was restricted?

Unless you happen to live in NYC, then it's business as usual. I'm not feeling sorry for someone with a $2 mil apartment that's got a turbine in the living room right now.

ohh for crying out loud!
youd love to be that guy who's got a 2 million dollar appartment, you dont care if he gets hurt cause you're dying with envie!
CCN reporting plane was registered to Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle. Bad week for the Yankees if he was at the stick. He bought a Cirrus SR20 in the off season

Thurman Munson seems to have an heir, his name is Corey Lidle, and according to CNN, it was his plane, and he was the pilot of the plane.
His passport was just reported to have been found on the street.
Oooops.

That's the whole point, einstein. I expect people not to care for me either in that case.

Think you could make that image just a tad bit bigger?
How in the hell does a guy who can throw a 3" ball through a 12"x12" strike zone fly an airplane in to the side of a building???
It'll be interesting to see the radar tapes and hear the ATC comms on this one. I mean, unless the plane was disabled and he couldn't control it, what the hell??
Also, if he was disabled and couldn't control the plane, this is one of those planes that has a parachute built into the plane. Just pull the friggin' cord and walk away... without taking out any buildings. Sheesh.

Don't **** with Steinbrenner, I tell you.
Jeter's gonna bat 400 next year for sure.
Also from another forum:
Chris Berman commented that Cory Lidle couldn't hit the side of a building after he walked three straight batters in the bottom of the 7th...
Ouch.

My cowork heard Lidle on the radio show Mike and Mad Dog the other day, he said he was very angry for the media portraying him badly and some other stuff.
Maybe this is his revenge? If they don't find the body, maybe he faked his death al la Krutsy the Clown

What a senseless tragedy. I mean, that's probably not even A-Rod's building.

I'm just thankful that it didn't hit a room full of school girls for a change.
