Group mountain bike ride at Chino Hills State Park (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=648). This is geared toward beginners, but all are welcome. You should have some cycling fitness, though. No drop. If you're experienced, you can help out newbies. Chino Hills State Park is fairly easy riding, with mostly fire road trails. Optionally, there are a couple of sections of non-technical, but fun single track. There are some short but steep hills for those wanting more of a workout. PDF Park Map (http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/648/files/ChinoHillsMap.pdf).
Meet at the EAST END of the Carbon Canyon Regional Park parking lot. (after entering the park, turn left and continue to the end) This is only about 1/2 mile from the west entrance of CHSP, so we'll ride over. Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=4442+Carbon+Canyon+Road,+Brea,+CA+92823&ie=UTF8&z=11&ll=33.922281,-117.833862&spn=0.332178,0.86792&om=1&iwloc=A)
Directions: Take the 57 Fwy to Lambert Rd. Head East on Lambert Rd. until it turns into Carbon Canyon Rd. (142). The entrance to Carbon Canyon Park is on the right-hand side, (approx. 3 mi. East of the 57 Fwy). There is parking inside the park for a few bucks or free on a nearby side street.
Saturday, October 21. Meet at 8:30am. Roll at 9am.
Ride Length: Minimum: 14 mi / 2 hrs, with optional added length up to: ~25+ mi / 4 hrs (MAX)
Small CamelBaks are usually preferred over bottles for MTBing, so bring yours if you have. Water bottles are fine, though (48 oz. / 2 large bottles minimum). Bring your regular ride snacks. Helmet and gloves recommended. If you're in need of a bike, or have loaners available, post here.
Check back on this post for updates.

If you don't want pay the $5 weekend parking fee you can park on the side street and ride thru Carbon Canyon Park to the trail head.
A good trail for beginners is Telgraph Canyon to 4 Corners. You can ride back on the same trail back or if you want do alittle more technical stuff you can try Bovinian Delight to South Ridge.

Hey guys and gals.
I would love to join you all, are there any loaner bikes left? I got my hardtail stolen when I moved up to LA in March. Mine was an 18" Karakoram, if no more loaners would a beach cruiser work for these trails? Yes I am anxious to get dirty.
Thanks

Telegraph Canyon to Four Corners is probably do-able (about 7 mi). But after that it may be tricky. Any climbing, descending, and single-track would be difficult and/or dangerous on a rear-braked cruiser.

Might be a good idea to clarify - once in Carbon Canyon Regional Park - where everyone should park.
Two good options. - the first - enter Park and turn left go to the very end of the parkway - the road ends in a lot which is right at the start of the CH - Telegraph trail.
Another option, enter park turn right and park at the first restroom off the road (on the right side). There is a port a pottie at the trail head but at times its, well, icky. Generally I like to start out with a nice restroom (yes I know a "girl" thing) and then have a nice little warmup to shake out any problems with my bike before hitting the trail.
Distance from trail head to 4 Corners is 6 miles. It is a gradual climb all the way which means coming back Telegraph is down hill and good fun. At 4 Corners, if looking for some more climbing, take Bovian Delight. It's a 1 mile climb (singletrack - very technical in places - beginners may need to walk) to South Ridge and return ont he South Ridge trail. There's only one bad hill coming back but South Ridge is a nice, wide fire road. Ride distance will be about 15 miles total.
For more advanced riders - do Telegraph to 4 Corners nad then return back Telegraph but take Sycamore to North Ridge. A steady but doable climb and North Ridge is a fast fun downhill. More advance take Rapture down to Ranger Station. I haven't done the trail in two years due to overgrowth but I hear it's now open. It's a very technical downhill. Be careful. To climb back opt for South Ridge not Telegraph and the "3 *****es".
Wish I could ride out with you. I'll be there in spirit. This is my favorite riding park!
PS: Helmets should not be recommended but required. This isn't a flat easy trail and falls and injuries may occur. I know from experience - helmet, wear a helmet! Gloves too. Protect those hands!

winter is the best time for MTB rides, the morning wetness lays down a great tackyness to the dirt for lots of traction for the corners and climbs.
If some have lights, I'm willing to drive up for some weekday night rides since weekends are booked for a while. I normally ride 4 days a week and would love to mix in some more group rides. Right now all I have is Wed group rides.

Sorry, Cali. The only ride scheduled for 10/21 on the "upcoming rides" post was the Las Vegas Century... not exactly local. I think some were anxious, myself included, to go for a ride that wasn't months away. We've got a pretty good group together on somewhat short notice. There will be more.

Just a 'head's up' in regards to future ride dates.... both bcipam and vmc are docents for some beautiful areas in irvine with lots of options regarding skill level, terrain etc. So, for future rides (which I for one, really want to do) we can actually schedule a time to get a privately led ride(s) in areas we wouldn't normally have any access to :D
I'm gonna want to get all of the practice I can!

Speaking of wetness, if it "The R Word"s, the park is usually closed for several days after. If it happens, you may need someone to scope out the ride before Saturday. A couple of years ago, they'd keep it closed for nearly a week after an "R Word"!...only bring this up cause I heard it's in the forecast. Not sure how much, but I heard.

There's the west entrance off of Carbon Canyon Rd (from 57 fwy). This is where we're entering (but we're meeting at Carbon Canyon Park, just to the west). There's also the Rimcrest Entrance, Accessible from Yorba Linda Blvd. There is no official parking here, just residential streets.

From 71, Exit Chino Hill Parkways going West then Left onto Carbon Canyon 142. Go down til almost the end, you'll see the park and cars on the Left. If you hit the new houses, you went to far.

I disagree on this. I think it's an individual's right/responsibility (assuming they're adults) to research and choose what safety gear to wear or not to wear. Again, I recommend wearing a helmet while MTBing.

That's 50 oz. Def. on the small size. 70 oz is kinda of the preferred minimum, with 100 oz necessary for epic and or summer rides. But, it should be fine for this ride. 50 oz is the same as two large water bottles. Add one more in your bottle cage and you should be good.

Bovian is indeed a technical singletrack - although for experienced mountain bikers it's far easier going although I know a few experienced riders who have taken fairly nasty spills on Bovian. For Beginners - this is indeed a technical trail (but fun!). Just keep that in mind. Easier is riding up Sycamore to North Ridge and taking North Ridge down. North Ridge is an "E" ticket downhill (but OK for beginners)!
Although I realize there is no law, responsibility or duty requiring the use of helmets, I'm hoping it's not a issue for everyone to wear one. Just makes sense. As someone who has had a few bad spills onto her noggin, I know that a helmet has and can save a life. Just like carrying enough food and water on a ride, bikers should also have the right equipment which includes gloves, mechical equipment and a helmet. My soap box issue - I apologize if this public service annoucement has offended anyone! ;) Carry on!

I've always worn a helmet. Right when I started to wonder why, caught my front wheel in a rut, endo'd onto into a 24 mph bodyslam on some hardpacked. Walked away but broke my helmet from back to front. I keep it as a reminder why I wear one!:D
