Anyone use their bike for hunting and fishing? I need a good method for carrying a rifle, shotgun, or fishing pole. The laws here require that guns be cased, even on a bike. I was thinking of some sort of rack on the front, either parallel with the front forks or parallel with the handlebars. I have a rack on back but it is loaded with a trunk bag. Any ideas or pics would be appreciated.

Here in Michigan, if your gun is in a gun sock it is considered "cased". Keep that in mind and double check your local laws.
I have a set of modified handlebars that hold my bow. I perfer to ride my bike out in the field instead of walking or using an ATV, and I'm sure other hunters on the board will understand why without me going into detail.
Since I don't hunt with a gun, bow only, I have no hard solution for you. But if you have access to a welder, I'd suggest getting a cheap pair of steel handlebars, welding on some brackets, and using foam for padding and ratchet straps for stability cary your gun that way, unloaded of course ;).
You can treat the handlebars, as I have, with rust inhibitors and a thick coat of paint. Plus mine are wrapped in camo tape to give me that "red neck" look. ;)
good luck with your quest, I'm sure you'll come up with something, especially if you can use a gun sock as a case.

I used to have a 2 ft fishing pole I'd take with me on my bike. Pretty convenient, and I used to have a blast. :)

I believe most states allow a gun sock. When I lived in jersey the only requirement was for it to be covered, and that included just wrapping it in a sheet or blanket.

I have seen a length of pvc pipe hose clamped to the rear rack support being used to carry a 2 piece rod.

I have carried a rod strapped to the top tube using zefal pump straps, the kind with rubber blocks that stand the pump off a bit.

I guess I'd have no problem with my rod, it's a 9pc fly rod, breaks down to about 13inches ;)

I've strapped my 2 pc, 5½' ultralight spinning setup right on my rear rack and carried my gear in a pannier on the side. I haven't found a good way to do something with the 12 Ga yet. That cased thing makes it impractical for buzzing down a trial in the grouse woods. If it were legal I'd leave it uncased and just carry it on my back by the sling and load when I saw something. You might also try looking at some of the ATV catalogs for ideas on gun/bow mounts. One guy brings his O/U to the gun club on his Harley, but that is taken down and fitted in a small hard case.

Bike trailer? You could build one yourself or modify one perhaps.

Can't help with the gun but I often carry my fishing rods strapped to my top tube with velcro and a bit of foam padding to protect rods and paint. They're all 2 or 3 pce that break down to about 24 inches.

A shotgun on this rig gets slid in along a side rail (between the side and the cooler), butt foreward, top of the receiver down. My 30-06 also rides like this, but with the scope up.

With this everything goes in the boat. In fact, in this picture there is a Remington 870 in the bottom of the canoe on the starboard side, right in front of the stern seat.

I carry pistols, when I have one with me, in my pack while in transport.

I'm thinking you could probably get two of those plastic rod holders from Bass Pro Shop or Cabelas and fasten them to the legs of your rear rack with hose clamps. Then stick your rod in the tubes and use the reels as fastening points for bungee cords.

I don't hunt or fish much, but hats off to you people who are able to combine that with cycling. Thats true outdoorsmanship...Teddy Roosevelt would be proud!

If you have a rear rack, you can fasten a scabbard that is meant for a saddle to it and the left chain stay. That way it will ride vertically behind you and be much less cumbersome than some of the other suggestions. Oh, yeah how are you planning on carrying you deer out? That sounds more difficult than a gun.

A sock is legal here. I wish there was a good bike mounted gun case but I've yet to see one. I'm thinking of just buying a case with a shoulder strap.
I was really surprised to find out that I needed to have my gun unloaded and in a case even on my bike.
Bicycles let me get away from the crowds. With most folks, if they can't drive in with their 4 wheelers or outboards they don't go. And yes, I've twice carried a deer out on my bike. It ain't easy but it beats dragging.

1+ from the state that wants to take your guns (and fishing rods?) away. CommuterRun in particular. Very impressive.
